Algeria’s Presidential Elections: 10 Political Parties Ready to Rally Behind Consensus Candidate

Algiers, Algeria | June 4th, 2024 — Representatives from ten political parties convened to stress the importance of selecting a “consensus candidate” during a conference addressing the upcoming Presidential Election slated for September 7th in Algiers.
The final communiqué issued at the conclusion of the conference, held at the headquarters of the El-Bina Movement, underscored the urgent need to identify a consensus candidate capable of steering Algeria towards stability and progress. This candidate must fulfill specific criteria, including safeguarding decision-making sovereignty, fortifying institutional stability, fostering participatory democracy, upholding social achievements, advancing economic successes, completing the anti-corruption efforts, and championing just causes.
Participating alongside the El Bina Movement were El Fadjr El Djadid, the Front of the New Algeria, El Karama, the Movement of National Harmony, the Party of Freedom and Justice, El Wassit Siyassi, the Algerian Green Party for Development, the Algerian Renewal Party, and the Union of Democratic and Social Forces (UFDS). Reflecting on President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s current term, the parties acknowledged his fulfillment of commitments and promises despite challenges such as the Covid pandemic and global market fluctuations.
The political parties emphasized the need for adequate time to pursue other legitimate objectives and aspirations, allowing for the realization of national projects capable of fostering the country’s renaissance through the collective participation of all Algerians.
