Algiers, Algeria | June 12th, 2024 — The president of the National Independent Election Authority (ANIE), Mohamed Charfi, announced on Wednesday in Boumerdes that 14 candidates for the upcoming presidential election on September 7 have withdrawn forms for collecting endorsement signatures.

Charfi revealed that these candidates have collectively withdrawn a total of one million copies of signature subscription forms as of 6:00 PM on Tuesday. This step follows the immediate availability of the forms by the ANIE after the electoral body was convened by the President of the Republic on June 8.

Charfi discussed the ongoing process of revising electoral lists, emphasizing their periodic updating and thorough review before each electoral event. This revision also considers the new electoral map, which includes many emerging urban centers.

A new initiative has been launched by the ANIE to encourage youth participation in the electoral process. This involves recruiting young people as volunteer observers to oversee the election operations and polling stations. Selection criteria for these roles include total neutrality and a requisite level of education and awareness.

Charfi assured that the ballot boxes for the upcoming election will be protected and secured against any fraud or violation. He affirmed that the Algerian public can trust that the president elected will be the one chosen by the people through the ballot.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance transparency and public trust in the electoral process, ensuring that the forthcoming presidential election is conducted fairly and securely.
