Algiers, Algeria | June 2nd, 2024 — The recent endorsement by Abdelkader Bengrina, leader of the El Bina Movement, for President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s second term has reignited existing political rivalries. This declaration has not only caused discord among potential allied parties but also provoked a strong reaction from Abdelkrim Benmbarek, leader of the National Liberation Front (FLN), followed by a response from Bengrina.

In a heated verbal exchange, Bengrina vehemently denied Benmbarek’s accusations, asserting that his party never committed to issuing a joint statement in support of President Tebboune’s candidacy. “We are men of our word and we do not break our commitments,” he stated firmly, adding that “no agreement had been made with other political entities in this regard.”

Bengrina justified his party’s support for Tebboune’s candidacy by emphasizing the need to continue the “New Algeria” project. He argued that in a relentless global context, the country cannot afford to miss the opportunities that present themselves.

“The FLN is the Locomotive”

In response, the FLN leader reiterated during his speech at a study day on “party discipline and the ethics of political life” at the party headquarters in Algiers, the FLN’s commitment to playing a central role in the upcoming presidential election. He affirmed the party’s intention to lead the electoral process. “We will be the ones leading others, not the other way around,” he declared, making a clear reference to the Islamist leader. The day before, Benmbarek had accused Bengrina of acting alone in endorsing Abdelmadjid Tebboune, while the issue had been previously discussed within the Alliance, which includes the FLN, RND, El Moustakbal, and El Bina.

Additionally, he emphasized the importance of restoring the FLN’s position and leadership, denouncing elements he believes are detrimental to the party’s integrity and discipline.

Reaffirming his party’s stance for the upcoming presidential election, the FLN leader stressed that it would be unlike previous ones. In this context, he highlighted the party’s commitment to combating abstention, underscoring “the crucial importance of active and engaged citizen participation.”
