Algeria’s Presidential Elections: A Pillar of Political Stability, Affirms Minister of Communication Mohamed Laagab

Algiers, Algeria | September 7th, 2024 — In an interview with Al-Mayadeen, Algeria’s Minister of Communication, Dr. Mohamed Laagab, highlighted the crucial role of the presidential elections in reinforcing the political stability the country has enjoyed over the past five years. This stability, he noted, is one of the lasting achievements of the 2019 popular movement, the “blessed Hirak,” which reshaped Algeria’s political landscape.
Laagab stressed that these elections come at a pivotal moment, both regionally and globally, as the world witnesses significant events in regions, such as the Sahel, the Middle East, and beyond. He underscored that political stability and constitutional continuity are vital for Algeria to continue its path of reform initiated in 2019. According to Laagab, the nation’s reliance on the ballot box to resolve political issues is essential for securing its democratic future. He urged the Algerian people to participate actively in the elections, emphasizing the importance of their role in selecting the country’s leader.
The minister also noted the political evolution Algeria is experiencing, particularly through the participation of two major opposition parties, the Movement of Society for Peace (MSP) and the Socialist Forces Front (FFS), both of which had previously boycotted elections. Their involvement in this presidential race, alongside independent candidate Abdelmadjid Tebboune, has invigorated the political landscape. Laagab pointed out that all three candidates carried out robust and widespread electoral campaigns across the nation, energizing voters in every region.
One of the most significant developments, according to Laagab, is the notable and peaceful engagement of the Kabylie region in the electoral campaign. For the first time in years, candidates were able to hold rallies and grassroots outreach events in this historically contentious area. The minister attributed this change, in part, to President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s recent visit to Tizi Ouzou, where he inaugurated several projects and made significant political statements, fostering a more open political atmosphere.
Media Coverage and Transparency
Laagab also commended the comprehensive and professional media coverage provided to all three presidential candidates. He emphasized that both public and private media outlets gave the candidates ample and equitable exposure, with no complaints reported to the National Election Monitoring Authority. This, according to Laagab, is a positive indicator of the transparency and professionalism of the media during the election period.
The minister further highlighted the growing prominence of digital media in Algeria, noting that online journalism has played a significant role in covering the elections. “Algeria is placing increasing importance on electronic journalism, and this election has showcased the crucial role it plays in informing the public,” Laagab remarked.
Voter Participation and Future Prospects
Looking ahead to election day, Laagab expressed optimism about voter turnout, citing the broad participation of major political parties. He noted that voter turnout around the world typically averages between 40% and 50%, referencing recent elections in the United States and Iran as examples. Regardless of the turnout, Laagab emphasized that the ultimate decision lies with the ballot box, and no constitution in the world invalidates an election based on participation rates.
In conclusion, Minister Laagab predicted that the upcoming period would bring significant changes to Algeria’s political, economic, and social spheres. He asserted that these elections are a critical step in achieving those transformations, with the ultimate goal of ensuring a prosperous future for Algeria.
