Algiers, Algeria | September 7th, 2024 — On Saturday, Minister of Communication Mohamed Laagab reassured the public that Algeria has mobilized all necessary resources to guarantee smooth and efficient media coverage of the highly anticipated presidential election. His remarks came during a visit to the International Press Center (CIP) at the International Conference Center in Algiers, where he personally inspected the facilities and spoke with journalists. Laagab’s visit underscored the government’s dedication to ensuring that both national and international media have everything they need to carry out their duties effectively.
A Strong Foreign Media Presence Signifies Global Interest
Laagab revealed that approximately 1,500 media personnel have been accredited for the event, including not only journalists but also technicians and support staff. The impressive turnout includes around 100 foreign journalists from 19 countries, representing more than 50 media institutions, as well as 36 permanent correspondents based in Algeria. This substantial foreign media presence, Laagab noted, reflects the global interest in Algeria’s electoral process and the nation’s growing significance on the international stage.
“An election of this magnitude is not only a national concern but an event of international importance,” Laagab emphasized. “The presence of such a diverse range of foreign media outlets highlights how Algeria’s democratic processes are being observed with keen interest by the global community.”
Robust Infrastructure for Seamless Media Operations
In an effort to facilitate the work of journalists covering the elections, Laagab confirmed that all necessary infrastructures are in place, including media studios, internet-connected spaces, and specialized facilities to support television, radio, and print journalists. The Minister was unequivocal about the government’s commitment to making this process as accessible as possible. “We have made sure that all media, both domestic and international, have the best possible working conditions,” Laagab stated. “From fully equipped studios to dedicated spaces for digital media and press, we are providing the infrastructure to ensure comprehensive coverage.”
This meticulous attention to detail extends beyond media facilities. The Ministry of Communication has ensured that journalists have access to transportation, allowing them to move seamlessly between the Press House and the International Conference Center. This logistical support began on September 4, further emphasizing the government’s commitment to transparency and smooth operations during the election period.
A Major Political Event in Algeria’s History
During his visit, Laagab did not shy away from acknowledging the symbolic importance of the election for Algeria. “This is the second presidential election since the Hirak movement,” he reminded reporters. “The stakes are high, and the process of electing a leader is a testament to our democratic values and commitment to the rule of law.” He added that this election marks a crucial step in maintaining the legitimacy of governance in Algeria, underlining that “the era of decisions made outside the framework of popular will and constitutional process is over.”
Laagab stressed that this election is a significant event in the political careers of journalists as well, stating, “For journalists, missing an election of this magnitude—whether in Algeria or anywhere else—means missing an essential part of their career. Covering this election offers unique insight into the political landscape of Algeria and the region.”
Tackling Misinformation and Safeguarding Integrity
Laagab also addressed the challenges posed by misinformation, particularly from certain foreign media outlets, which, according to him, have sought to undermine the credibility of the electoral process. “While we respect the media’s freedom to cover events as they see fit, it is crucial that they report verified and accurate information,” Laagab said firmly. He warned against any attempt to distort the reality of the election, stressing that “some foreign media appear to be intent on discrediting the election, as if they could speak on behalf of the Algerian people. This is unacceptable.”
His remarks come amidst growing concerns over disinformation campaigns, which Laagab believes are part of a broader strategy to destabilize Algeria. “Our electoral process is proceeding smoothly, and while we understand that media outlets may have differing perspectives, we cannot tolerate the dissemination of falsehoods,” he concluded. The Minister called for vigilance in maintaining the integrity of the election, particularly in light of the external forces that may seek to exploit the event to sow discord.
Unwavering Support for Media Freedom
In closing, Laagab reiterated Algeria’s unwavering support for press freedom, provided that it is exercised responsibly. “Our goal is not to stifle dissent but to ensure that the coverage is fair, balanced, and reflective of the true democratic process taking place in Algeria today,” he asserted. He noted that all accredited foreign media outlets have been granted access to the tools and resources necessary to conduct their work freely, including dedicated spaces for written and digital press, editing rooms, and broadcasting facilities.
