Algeria’s Presidential Elections: Abdelaali Hassani Cherif, Tarek Zeghdoud, and Chaabi Salem Submit Candidacy Papers

Algiers, Algeria | July 18th, 2024 — The political landscape in Algeria is heating up as three prominent figures have officially submitted their candidacy for the upcoming presidential election on September 7.
Abdelaali Hassani Cherif Submits Candidacy
The leader of the Movement of Society for Peace (MSP), Abdelaali Hassani Cherif, submitted his declaration of candidacy to the National Independent Electoral Authority (ANIE) at the Palace of Nations in Algiers. Speaking to the press, Hassani Cherif emphasized the significance of the upcoming election, stating, “As an active political party, the MSP must be present with its candidate and its program.”
He highlighted that his candidacy has garnered support from the Ennahda Movement and numerous citizens, marking this as the second election since the peaceful Hirak movement that united Algerians around the themes of reform and change. “This election is an opportunity for reform, change, and overcoming all the political, social, and economic challenges Algeria has faced in the past,” he said. Hassani Cherif sees this election as a chance to focus on the future amidst regional and international changes.
Tarek Zeghdoud Enters the Race
Tarek Zeghdoud, Secretary General of the Algerian Rally Party (RA), also submitted his candidacy to ANIE. He articulated his vision of contributing to the consolidation of the democratic process and the reinforcement of national unity. Zeghdoud’s campaign slogan, “Security, Progress, and Prosperity,” aims to address development issues and meet the aspirations of Algerian citizens. “My candidacy is about finding solutions to achieve development and respond to the citizens’ aspirations,” Zeghdoud asserted.
Chaabi Salem Declares Independent Candidacy
Independent candidate Chaabi Salem submitted his declaration of candidacy, expressing gratitude to the citizens who helped collect the required signatures for his campaign. Salem pledged, if elected, to serve the country and its people. “I salute the citizens who contributed to the collection of the individual signature forms for this election,” he said, committing himself to the nation’s service.
These developments mark a pivotal moment in Algeria’s political scene as candidates prepare to engage with voters and outline their visions for the country’s future. The election on September 7 is set to be a defining event for Algeria, potentially shaping the nation’s path for years to come.
