Algeria’s Presidential Elections: ANIE’s Charter of Ethics, Commitment to Electoral Integrity

Algiers, Algeria | July 30th, 2024 — The Charter of Ethics established by the National Independent Authority for Elections (ANIE) stands as a fundamental framework for promoting ethical practices in elections and enhancing political conduct. Originally introduced in 2019 in preparation for that year’s presidential election, the charter continues to focus on improving electoral conditions and ensuring ethical behavior within the political sphere.

Mohamed Charfi, President of ANIE, described the charter as a pioneering step in Algeria’s electoral process. “For the first time, this charter established guiding principles for the ethical conduct of all participants in the electoral process,” Charfi explained during a recent interview with National Radio. “It was signed by the five presidential candidates in 2019, as well as by heads and directors of both public and private media, along with all other entities involved in political and electoral activities.”

Charfi stressed the importance of this document as a crucial guide for all stakeholders involved. “The engagement of all parties—candidates, political parties, media, and civil society organizations—is essential for ensuring the transparency and regularity of elections through a framework of participatory supervision,” he added.

He also pointed out a key element of the presidential oath, which emphasizes respect for the electoral process and its outcomes. “We are committed to upholding this principle and ensuring the effective execution of this vital event, which is critical for the advancement of democracy and good governance,” Charfi concluded.
