Algiers, Algeria | August 16th, 2024 — Independent candidate Abdelmadjid Tebboune, in his bid for a second term as Algeria’s president, has reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining robust social welfare programs, enhancing the purchasing power of citizens, and safeguarding Algeria’s financial stability. Tebboune, who previously led the country through turbulent times, aims to further economic growth, combat corruption, and strengthen local democracy as part of his presidential campaign for the September 7, 2024, election.
During a recent appearance on the program “Direct Expression,” Tebboune outlined his vision for Algeria’s future, emphasizing his dedication to protecting vulnerable populations, boosting youth empowerment, and expanding housing initiatives. His platform focuses on sustaining the progress achieved in financial and economic domains, while simultaneously preserving the state’s social identity and broadening opportunities for growth across various sectors.
A cornerstone of Tebboune’s campaign is his pledge to significantly improve citizens’ living standards. He promised to reduce income taxes and raise wages by up to 100% by 2027, alongside adjusting retirement pensions to ensure a dignified life for all. Tebboune also emphasized his administration’s success in reducing inflation from 11% to 6%, thereby stabilizing the Algerian dinar and fortifying the nation’s currency.
On the local governance front, Tebboune advocates for revisions to both the communal and wilaya codes, aimed at empowering local elected officials and fostering a more inclusive democracy at the municipal level. Additionally, he supports a reconfiguration of Algeria’s administrative divisions to address regional imbalances and drive more equitable development across the country.
Reflecting on his first term, Tebboune highlighted his administration’s achievements, particularly in the fight against corruption. His government issued 285 international letters rogatory in 32 countries, leading to the identification of 755 bank accounts linked to embezzled funds. These efforts underscore Tebboune’s resolve to recover Algeria’s stolen wealth and ensure accountability.
Tebboune also recounted the numerous challenges his administration faced, including the global COVID-19 pandemic, efforts to create artificial shortages of essential goods, and the devastation caused by wildfires across multiple regions. He assured the public that his government had supported citizens through these crises, providing compensation and assistance to those affected by natural disasters.
In the realm of economic policy, Tebboune lauded Algeria’s financial recovery and the bolstering of foreign exchange reserves, achieved without resorting to international borrowing. He warned that external borrowing could jeopardize Algeria’s hard-won political independence, stressing the importance of fiscal discipline.
Born on November 17, 1945, in Mecheria (Naâma Province), Tebboune has long been a fixture in Algerian public service. His upbringing was deeply influenced by his family’s nationalistic activism during the French colonial era. He pursued his studies in Sidi Bel Abbès before graduating from the National School of Administration in 1969, specializing in Economics and Finance.
Tebboune’s extensive career in public administration began in the provinces of Djelfa, Adrar, Tiaret, and Tizi Ouzou, where he served in various leadership roles. By 1991, he had transitioned to the national stage, holding ministerial positions, such as Minister of Communication and Culture, Minister of Housing and Urban Development, and ultimately, Prime Minister in 2017.
In his 2019 presidential campaign, Tebboune ran on a platform of 54 commitments aimed at creating a “New Algeria.” Now, seeking re-election, Tebboune is focused on expanding the reforms he initiated during his first term, reinforcing Algeria’s social safety nets, driving economic development, and securing the nation’s financial independence. His unwavering dedication to Algeria’s stability and prosperity remains at the forefront of his vision for the country’s future.
