Algiers, Algeria | August 26th, 2024 — On Sunday, August 25, 2024, independent presidential candidate Abdelmadjid Tebboune continued his electoral campaign with a strong pledge to revitalize Algeria’s economy, create jobs, and enhance citizens’ living conditions. Speaking at a packed rally at the Miloud Hadfi Olympic Complex in Oran, Tebboune outlined an ambitious plan to raise Algeria’s national income to $400 billion by 2027 and tackle unemployment, particularly among the youth.
Recognizing the ongoing struggle with youth unemployment, Tebboune committed to creating 450,000 new jobs during his next term, with a focus on nurturing startup companies. He celebrated the dramatic growth in entrepreneurship since 2019, from 200 startups to 7,000 today, attributing this success to the government’s supportive policies. Tebboune also highlighted 3,800 proposed investment projects that are expected to generate 300,000 jobs, building on the 500,000 youth already employed under his leadership.
In an effort to ease the burden of unemployment, Tebboune announced plans to increase the unemployment allowance to 20,000 DZD per month by 2025. He emphasized the uniqueness of Algeria’s program in the region, noting its effectiveness in shielding youth from exploitation while acknowledging the need to improve the support provided.
Tebboune took pride in his efforts to revive the national economy, reclaiming 51 companies previously seized by corrupt officials and reactivating 150 idle companies. Additionally, he announced the launch of 8,000 new investments, including significant projects like the Gara Djebilet mine, which will create jobs in several provinces by the end of 2025.
Housing was another central theme in Tebboune’s speech. He reaffirmed his commitment to providing 2 million new homes, with a particular focus on rural areas to boost agricultural production. He vowed to achieve self-sufficiency in wheat, barley, and corn by 2025, thereby eliminating the need for imports of these critical crops.
In a bid to enhance purchasing power, Tebboune pledged to raise wages and further reduce inflation, which he had successfully lowered from 11% to 6.5% during his first term. He also promised to support self-employed youth entrepreneurs, aiming to increase their number to 500,000 by working closely with banks, administration, and the Supreme Youth Council. Tebboune’s vision includes expanding the number of startups to 20,000 during his next term.
On the education front, Tebboune committed to implementing the new basic law for teachers by the end of 2024. He also promised to extend the national railway network to southern provinces, such as Tamanrasset and Adrar, as part of his larger plan to address water shortages and drought, including linking dams to ensure equitable water distribution.
Tebboune also promised to complete the transformation of the nation’s “marginalized areas” by 2025, ensuring that these rural and underserved regions receive full governmental support. His plan includes building 2 million new housing units, 600,000 of which will be in rural areas, with the goal of reducing poverty and improving the quality of life for the rural population.
With these pledges, Tebboune’s rally in Oran further underscored his focus on national development, economic reform, and social equity, positioning these issues at the heart of his campaign as he appeals to voters across Algeria.
