Algiers, Algeria | September 3rd, 2024 — Starting Wednesday, nomadic populations and residents of remote and isolated areas in the southern wilayas of Algeria begin casting their votes at itinerant polling stations as part of the presidential election set for September 7.

The National Independent Authority for Elections (ANIE) has assured that “all necessary human and material resources have been mobilized to ensure the smooth conduct of the voting process” in these regions.

In the wilaya of Tindouf, voting will commence 72 hours before the official election day at 12 itinerant polling stations. Similarly, the wilaya of Ouargla has set up 6 itinerant polling stations in the remote areas of the El Borma district.

The wilaya of Adrar will have 3 itinerant polling stations, where voting will begin 24 hours prior to September 7. These stations are located in the communes of Tsabit, Timi, and Reggane.

In the border wilaya of Bordj Badji Mokhtar, 6 itinerant polling stations will open 48 hours in advance to accommodate nomadic voters in the communes of Bordj Badji Mokhtar and Timiaouine.

Djanet, situated in the far southeast of the country, will have 9 itinerant polling stations, with voting starting 72 hours before the official election date.

Tamanrasset, with an electorate of 21,603 registered voters, will operate 29 itinerant polling stations. Voting will begin 72 hours early at 19 stations and 48 hours early at the remaining 10.

In Salah will see voting begin 48 hours early at 2 of its 4 itinerant polling stations, with the other 2 starting 24 hours before election day.

In Béchar, voting will start 72 hours early at 4 itinerant polling stations, with an additional mixed station opening 24 hours early.

According to Article 132 of the organic law on the electoral system, the president of ANIE may authorize an early opening of polling stations by up to 72 hours in areas where it is impractical to conduct voting on the official election day due to the remoteness and dispersion of inhabitants. This decision will be communicated immediately by appropriate means.

ANIE has deployed teams to manage these itinerant polling stations, providing necessary resources, including off-road vehicles due to the challenging terrain. Observers and representatives of the three presidential candidates are also enabled to monitor the electoral process in these regions.
