Algeria’s Resolute Stand Thwarts Military Intervention: A Stumbling Block to France’s Ambitions in Niger

Algiers, August 20, 2023 – In a remarkable turn of events, Algeria has emerged as a regional player in the ongoing Niger crisis, forcefully opposing the option of military intervention. This stance has become a significant obstacle to French President Emmanuel Macron’s ambitions, undermining his desire for an ECOWAS-led attack on the country. As Algeria’s role gains prominence, experts analyze how the country’s steadfast approach has transformed it into a pivotal figure in the West African region.
The unfolding of Algeria’s pivotal role became evident in the wake of the military coup against Nigerien President Mohamed Bazoum. This coup laid bare France’s vested interests in Niger, particularly its pursuit of natural resources, including the coveted uranium metal. The illegal overthrow of an elected president further ignited Nigerien sentiments against France’s perceived colonial tactics, which appeared to exploit the nation’s resources while hindering its progress and prosperity.
The shockwaves that reverberated through France were not solely due to the coup itself, but rather from the unexpected reaction of Algeria. President Macron’s belief that France’s uranium supplies would continue unabated was proven wrong when Algeria demonstrated its remarkable agility and took decisive positions in response to the crisis.
Initially, President Macron welcomed Algeria’s verbal support for the restoration of legitimacy in Niger. However, he was taken aback when Algeria adamantly called for restraint and opposed any form of military intervention, be it through ECOWAS or France. Algeria’s determination to prevent external military involvement, rooted in its concerns for regional stability and security, posed a direct challenge to Macron’s plans.
With over 1,000 kilometers of shared border with Niger, Algeria recognized the potential ramifications of internal conflict on its own national security. Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf succinctly summarized Algeria’ stance during discussions with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, stating, “There is not a single example of a successful military intervention, and if we know when it begins, we do not know when it will end.”
This principled stand led Algeria to propose an alternative solution to the crisis – fostering dialogue among the various parties in Niger. This proactive approach, coupled with Algeria’s unwavering commitment to non-interference in the internal affairs of sovereign states, positioned the country as a counterweight to France’s and ECOWAS’ military intervention proposals.
Analysts have aptly described Algeria’s impact on France and ECOWAS as a “stumbling block” to their ambitions in Niger. President Macron’s aspirations were effectively thwarted as Algeria’ steadfast position prompted both entities to reconsider their aggressive stances. Algeria’s commitment to stability, diplomatic pressure, and respect for the sovereignty of nations set a resounding example, challenging the notion that military intervention is a viable solution.
As the Niger crisis continues to unfold, Algeria’s resolute opposition to military intervention stands as a testament to its regional influence, reflecting a determination to ensure a peaceful resolution that safeguards the well-being of the Nigerien people and preserves stability in the Sahel region.
