ALGIERS- In an attempt to quell the anger of thirsty Moroccans grappling with water scarcity, amidst accusations of being a kingdom rife with drug trafficking, human rights violations, prostitution, and child exploitation, the Moroccan government has announced plans to build “the largest seawater desalination plant on the continent.” However, this proclamation is met with skepticism and perceived as another strategic move in the regime’s misinformation campaign.
The Moroccan authorities assert that the desalination plant aims to address the country’s water challenges, a critical issue impacting the lives of many Moroccans who suffer from thirst and hunger. However, critics argue that this announcement appears to be a grand deception.
One crucial point of contention is that the proposed desalination plant is not expected to become operational until 2030, rendering it a promise for the distant future rather than an immediate solution to the pressing water crisis. Skeptics view this timeline as a tactic to pacify public dissatisfaction without providing tangible relief in the short term.
Moreover, Morocco’s claims of constructing the largest seawater desalination plant in Africa are met with doubt, especially when comparing the nation’s plans to the existing infrastructure in neighboring Algeria. The larger North African country already boasts operational desalination plants with a total production capacity of 721 million cubic meters per year. Algeria is further set to enhance its capabilities with the addition of five new desalination plants by the end of 2024, bringing its total seawater desalination capacity to an impressive 1.269 billion cubic meters per year.
With this substantial capacity in seawater desalination, Algeria positions itself as a leader on the continent in addressing water scarcity through innovative and immediate solutions. The stark contrast between Morocco’s promises for the future and Algeria’s tangible actions raises questions about the former’s commitment to addressing the urgent needs of its population.
As the water crisis continues to affect the daily lives of Moroccans, the government’s announcements face scrutiny, with many demanding concrete and immediate measures to alleviate the suffering caused by water shortages. The stark contrast in approaches between Morocco and its eastern neighbor, Algeria, raises questions about the priorities and effectiveness of the strategies employed by each country in managing their water resources and ensuring the well-being of their citizens.
