Algeria’s Role in International Peace Emphasized by Canadian Ambassador Michael Callan

Algiers, Algeria | June 12th, 2024 — The Canadian Ambassador to Algeria, Michael Callan, highlighted Algeria’s pivotal role in promoting international peace and security, particularly across Africa, during a press conference in Algiers. He commended Algeria for its positive contributions to global security and its commitment to upholding multilateralism and international law, emphasizing peaceful conflict resolution as per the United Nations Charter.
Ambassador Callan revealed Canada’s ambitious plans to deepen its engagement with Algeria across various sectors, including commerce, agriculture, transportation, and technology. He emphasized opportunities for cooperation and outlined discreet forms of collaboration that contribute to mutual security, such as police force training in domestic violence, preparedness for chemical attacks, and enhanced border and airport security training.
Canada aims to build a robust and mutually beneficial partnership with Algeria, advancing shared priorities in regional security, trade and investment, human rights, socio-economic development, and climate change initiatives. Ambassador Callan expressed Canada’s determination to elevate economic and commercial exchanges to new heights, highlighting Algeria as Canada’s largest export market in Africa and its fourth-largest bilateral trading partner globally, with trade surpassing 1.5 billion Canadian dollars in 2023.
In line with these objectives, Canada will participate in the 55th Algiers International Fair (FIA) with twelve companies showcasing expertise in agriculture, agro-industry, aerospace, clean energy, technology, higher education, and scientific research. Canadian capabilities in wildfire management will also be highlighted.
Ambassador Callan announced an upcoming economic mission by the Algerian Economic Renewal Council (CREA) to Canada in July, aiming to forge new partnerships. He noted recent high-level interactions between Canadian and Algerian leaders, which have strengthened bilateral ties. Praising Algeria’s new investment law for removing past barriers, he expressed confidence in its ability to encourage strategic partnerships and facilitate investments.
Trade Counselor Christine Colevray disclosed ongoing discussions between Canadian investors and the Algerian Agency for Investment Promotion (AAPI) regarding an agricultural project in southern Algeria, indicating promising prospects for future collaboration.
Overall, Canada’s strategic vision for Algeria underscores a commitment to deepening cooperation across multiple fronts, fostering economic growth, enhancing security, and strengthening cultural ties between the two nations.
