ALGIERS- Just a few hours after the announcement by the President of the Republic; Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, of an early presidential election, several political parties swiftly reacted to this unexpected decision. Among these parties are the Al Moustakbal Front, the FLN, the RND, and the TAJ, all of whom have expressed their approval of this initiative. With the exception of the MSP, which awaits the decision of its Shura Council to decide on its participation, the other parties had previously affirmed their intention to participate in this election.
The Al Moustakbal Front welcomed this decision, emphasizing a displayed willingness to preserve the constitutional process while underlining the importance of respecting electoral deadlines. It considers the move as evidence of the deep-rootedness of these values within the Republic’s institutions. The party also emphasized a desire to strengthen the national democratic framework. Referring to rumors and erroneous information suggesting a possible postponement of the election, the Al Moustakbal Front firmly rejected the “fallacious arguments put forward by opportunists, skeptics, and slanderers that harm the Algerian people in their quest for progress, as well as its institutions.”
Similarly, the FLN expressed its satisfaction with Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s decision to call for an early presidential election on September 7. In a statement released on Friday, the FLN described this decision as “sovereign,” emphasizing that it reflects “commitment to respecting electoral deadlines, institutional stability, and respect for the free and sovereign will of the Algerian people in choosing their leaders, in accordance with transparent, fair, pluralistic elections and in a democratic atmosphere.”
The FLN also explicitly responded to rumors and reports from foreign press outlets announcing the postponement of the presidential election. In this regard, it asserted that “contrary to what has been reported by some foreign media, the President of the Republic has announced early presidential elections (…) thereby rejecting doubts cast on state institutions.” The party termed the President’s decision as decisive, stressing that it will contribute to the success of this event. It also referred to it as an “important event that constitutes a crucial step in consolidating the ongoing transformation in various fields.” Furthermore, it called on “all active forces, political parties, civil society, and Algerian elites to make this event a new appointment for a strong Algeria with its institutions, its people, and its army.”
In a similar vein, the Movement of Society for Peace (MSP), whose president Abdelali Hassani Cherif expressed his desire for “an electoral climate characterized by transparency in preparation for the upcoming presidential election” from Laghouat, during a collective iftar with party activists, highlighted his party’s desire to put an end to outdated and harmful practices. Regarding the MSP’s participation in the early presidential election on September 7, it was clarified that this decision would depend on the deliberations of the National Shura Council, as well as organizational and consultative meetings at all levels.
A Response to the Skeptics
For its part, the RND, through its Secretary-General Mustapha Yahi, expressed satisfaction with the President’s decision to convene an early presidential election, interpreting this initiative as “a response to skeptics both inside and outside the country.” The RND leader also mentioned “the mobilization of all party militants for the success of this important electoral appointment.” Additionally, Mr. Yahi reiterated the RND’s support for “the reform process and the building of a strong state with solid institutions, as initiated by the President of the Republic.”
Echoing similar sentiments, the TAJ party stated in a communiqué that Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s decision is in line with his consistent efforts to bring about renewal. The party expressed its willingness to actively participate in the success of the upcoming presidential election. In almost identical terms to those used by other political parties, TAJ asserted that Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s decision constitutes “a resounding response to speculators, skeptics, and opportunists.”
