Algeria’s Sonatrach Announces Increase in Gas Production Amid Ambitious Investment Plan

ALGIERS- In a bid to bolster its hydrocarbon production capabilities, Algeria is set to embark on an ambitious investment plan, as announced by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. Prime Minister Nadir Larbaoui delivered the president’s message during a visit to Timimoune, commemorating the dual anniversary of the founding of the General Union of Algerian Workers (UGTA) and the nationalization of hydrocarbons.
President Tebboune outlined an ambitious strategy aimed at increasing Algeria’s primary hydrocarbon production by approximately 2% annually from 2023 to 2027, reaching an estimated 209 million tonnes of oil equivalent (TEP) by 2027. This plan involves significant investments in the exploration and development of new fields, as well as the enhancement of existing ones, to meet both domestic demand and export commitments.
During the ceremony, Sonatrach CEO Rachid Hachichi unveiled a major gas field development project in the southwest region of the country, with an expected production capacity of 14 million cubic meters per day (5 billion cubic meters per year). The project, covering sites including Hassi Ba Hamou, Hassi Tidjerane, and Tinerkouk, underscores Algeria’s commitment to expanding its gas production capabilities and solidifying its position as a key global gas supplier.
The inauguration of the Hassi Ba Hamou gas production center by Prime Minister Larbaoui marks a significant milestone in Algeria’s energy sector development. With a production capacity of nearly 4.5 million cubic meters per day of natural gas and the capability to process 6 million cubic meters per day of raw gas, the center represents a crucial asset in Algeria’s hydrocarbon infrastructure.
To support these initiatives, Sonatrach has allocated a substantial investment of $42 billion over the period 2023-2027, with 77% of this funding directed towards extraction activities aimed at increasing reserves and primary fuel production. This investment will also focus on developing petrochemical projects, enhancing environmental protection measures, and expanding renewable energy initiatives, including solar power and hydrogen production.
Looking ahead, Algeria aims to position itself as a leading player in renewable energy, with plans to export electricity to various countries in Africa and Europe. President Tebboune’s vision for sustainable development emphasizes the importance of transitioning to renewable energy sources, capitalizing on Algeria’s abundant solar resources and emerging hydrogen technology.
