Algiers, Algeria | August 16th, 2024 — In a significant development for Algeria’s energy sector, Sonatrach CEO Rachid Hachichi has announced that the company is in active discussions with Spanish partners to establish an undersea cable project designed to export electricity from Algeria to Spain. This new initiative aims to further enhance Algeria’s role as a key energy exporter, complementing an existing project that connects Algeria to Italy through a partnership with the Italian multinational ENI.
During an appearance on Algerian television’s “Likaa Télévision,” Hachichi elaborated on the scope and potential of the project. “Sonatrach has embarked on talks with Spanish operators to advance the development of the undersea cable project for electricity export to Spain. We are enthusiastic about exploring this opportunity and will be meeting with the Spanish team to assess the feasibility of this endeavor,” he stated.
Algeria, which experiences a significant electricity production surplus for about ten months each year, is strategically positioned to leverage this excess. Hachichi noted that the surplus could reach up to 10 gigawatts, with the national electricity production estimated at approximately 25 gigawatts.
The proposed undersea cable project is part of a broader strategy to solidify Algeria’s position as a leading energy exporter. Hachichi emphasized the transformative potential of this initiative, asserting that Algeria is poised to become “the battery of Europe,” capitalizing on its rich natural resources, favorable climatic conditions, and expertise in renewable energy development and green energy exportation.
In addition to the Spanish cable project, a comprehensive feasibility study is set to begin for another undersea cable linking Algeria to Italy. This project, slated to involve multiple lines rather than a single one, reflects the ambitious scale of the initiative. The feasibility study will be a collaborative effort between Sonatrach, Sonelgaz, and ENI, with the objective of launching the project at the earliest opportunity.
Looking ahead, Hachichi also highlighted Sonatrach’s focus on green hydrogen, revealing that the company has recently engaged German, Austrian, and Italian firms to invest alongside Sonatrach in this burgeoning sector. A memorandum of understanding is anticipated to be signed in September, initiating a joint feasibility study for the South H2 corridor project. This corridor is designed to facilitate the export of green hydrogen produced in Algeria to Europe via Tunisia and Italy.
This strategic approach underscores Algeria’s vision for a robust energy export framework, leveraging its production capabilities and international collaborations to establish itself as a leading supplier of renewable energy in the European market.
