Algiers- Algeria, May 17, 2024 — During the annual UN Decolonization Committee seminar held in Caracas, the Algerian delegation, led by Ambassador Amar Bendjama, forcefully defended the right of the people of Western Sahara to self-determination. This meeting, which took place on Wednesday, featured extensive discussions dominated by support for Western Sahara from numerous delegations, including those from Cuba, Bolivia, Timor-Leste, Venezuela, Angola, Belize, South Africa, Nicaragua, Zimbabwe, Iran, and Mexico.
Advocacy for Self-Determination
Ambassador Bendjama delivered a compelling speech, presenting a comprehensive array of legal, political, and historical arguments that reinforced the position of Western Sahara as an unfinished decolonization process. He emphasized that the issue of Western Sahara is fundamentally about the right to self-determination, as outlined in UN Resolution 1514. This stance, he argued, remains consistent with international law and the moral imperatives of decolonization.
The Algerian ambassador’s robust arguments appeared to unsettle the Moroccan representative, Omar Hilale, who responded with a series of contentious and contradictory statements. Hilale’s attempt to question Algeria’s role in the UN Security Council, particularly regarding the Palestinian cause, was met with surprise and disapproval from other delegations.
In his right of reply, Ambassador Bendjama firmly rebutted the Moroccan representative’s assertions. He highlighted the shared plight of Palestinians and Sahrawis, both struggling against colonialism and oppression. Bendjama stressed Algeria’s unwavering commitment to these causes, reaffirming that Algeria’s presence in the UN Security Council is dedicated to defending the rights of oppressed peoples.
Bendjama stated, “Palestinians and Sahrawis share the common denominator of being under colonial rule, fighting against oppression, and advocating for the liberation of their peoples and territories.” He underscored that Algeria’s advocacy is not merely symbolic but a fundamental duty and honor as a member of the international community.
Historical Context and Ongoing Efforts
Referring to Algeria’s election to the Security Council, Bendjama emphasized, “We swore that Algeria would determinedly play its recognized role as the voice of the oppressed and the voiceless, as Frantz Fanon once said.” He continued, “This is why we are here at this UN seminar on decolonization, to once again demand the right to self-determination for the people of Western Sahara.”
Bendjama also criticized the controversial deal between Morocco and the Zionist entity, describing it as a betrayal of the Palestinian cause. He highlighted the trade-off involving Morocco’s recognition of the Zionist entity in exchange for support for Morocco’s claim over Western Sahara, calling it a “dagger in the back” of the Palestinian struggle. He noted that this agreement was a grievous affront to the Palestinian people, one that history will remember with disdain.
In conclusion, Ambassador Bendjama reaffirmed Algeria’s steadfast support for the rights of both Palestinians and Sahrawis, stressing that Algeria will continue to champion these causes at the UN and beyond. “Upon returning to New York, the Algerian delegation will tirelessly and uncompromisingly defend the right to self-determination for the martyred Palestinian people. This is Algeria’s duty and honor within the concert of nations,” Bendjama declared.
The seminar in Caracas thus underscored Algeria’s unwavering stance on decolonization and self-determination, reaffirming its role as a vocal advocate for oppressed peoples in the international arena.
