Algiers, Algeria | October 6th, 2024 — In a forceful and decisive press meeting, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune addressed critical foreign policy issues, setting the tone for Algeria’s diplomatic direction amid rising regional tensions. The president’s remarks, focused on Algeria’s stance towards Morocco, its enduring ties with Russia, and the renegotiation of its commercial agreement with the European Union, underscored the country’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding its sovereignty and advancing its national interests on the global stage.

Tebboune began by tackling the recent imposition of visa restrictions on Moroccan nationals, a move that has sparked considerable debate in the region. The president clarified that the measure was taken for both “political and security reasons.” He condemned Morocco’s deepening relationship with the Zionist entity, which he described as a dangerous alliance that jeopardizes Algeria’s national security. “The twinning between Morocco and the Zionist regime represents a direct threat. We cannot allow the infiltration of Zionist intelligence under the cover of Moroccan passports. This is a critical danger to our country,” Tebboune asserted. His statement reflected the gravity of Algeria’s concerns over a deliberate attempt by external forces to destabilize the region.

Tebboune’s remarks also directly addressed rumors, propagated by Moroccan state media, that Algeria was preparing to expel Moroccan nationals residing within its borders. Dismissing these claims as baseless and inflammatory, the president was unequivocal in his response: “The Moroccan people are our brothers. There is no intention whatsoever to send them away. Those who respect our sovereignty and laws are welcome to stay. The idea of expelling Moroccans has never been on the table.” His words reflect a clear distinction between Algeria’s stance on the Moroccan government’s policies and its respect for the Moroccan people, reinforcing the narrative that Algeria’s actions are driven by security needs, not animosity.

Turning to Algeria’s long-standing relationship with Russia, President Tebboune reaffirmed the strength and depth of the partnership between the two nations. In light of rumors suggesting a potential rift between Algiers and Moscow, Tebboune was adamant: “With Russia, Algeria shares historic ties of friendship and mutual interest. We will not compromise or harm this relationship.” He emphasized the importance of maintaining strong international alliances, particularly with countries like Russia, which have stood by Algeria during pivotal moments in its history. “Our friendship with Russia is rooted in mutual respect and strategic cooperation. It is not subject to the whims of global shifts,” the president declared, cementing Algeria’s commitment to a balanced and multi-faceted foreign policy approach.

President Tebboune also addressed the future of Algeria’s economic relations with the European Union, signaling a potential shift in the dynamics of the longstanding commercial agreement. He acknowledged the need for a revision of the existing trade pact, which was originally signed under different circumstances. “The agreement with the EU was signed when Algeria’s economy was in a different phase of development. Today, Algeria has built its own industrial capabilities, especially in sectors like consumer electronics and manufacturing. The agreement must reflect this new reality,” Tebboune stated, highlighting Algeria’s growing economic self-reliance. He further explained that discussions with the EU will focus on achieving a more equitable balance, particularly regarding the trade of Algerian gas and European goods. “They want to sell us their products, but we also need fair terms for the gas we export. These discussions will take place in 2025, and we will ensure Algeria’s interests are protected,” he concluded.

The president’s statements underscore Algeria’s assertive approach to foreign policy, emphasizing a proactive stance in defending national sovereignty while engaging in strategic diplomacy. His remarks reflect a broader vision for a self-sufficient Algeria that continues to cultivate vital international relationships without compromising its core principles.
