Algiers, Algeria | January 22nd, 2025 —  In a significant step towards strengthening Algeria’s democratic institutions, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune signed a presidential decree convening the electoral body for March 9, 2025. This election will facilitate the partial renewal of the elected members of the Council of the Nation, reaffirming Algeria’s commitment to constitutional governance and political accountability.

The decision, rooted in Articles 91 (paragraph 7), 121, and 122 (paragraph 3) of the Algerian Constitution, was formalized in a decree issued by the Presidency of the Republic. “President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has signed a decree convening the electoral body on March 9, 2025, for the purpose of the partial renewal of elected members of the Council of the Nation,” the statement from the Presidency declared.

Strategic Renewal of Legislative Authority

The Council of the Nation, as the upper house of Algeria’s bicameral legislature, plays a pivotal role in shaping legislative priorities and ensuring regional representation. The forthcoming elections, which involve the renewal of half of its elected members, hold particular significance in aligning the Council’s composition with the evolving political and socioeconomic priorities of the nation.

The electoral process will see representatives of local elected councils—the electoral college—casting their votes to select candidates. This mechanism ensures a strong connection between regional governance structures and national policymaking, embodying the principles of decentralization and participatory democracy.

Constitutional Commitment to Stability

President Tebboune’s decree underscores his administration’s adherence to constitutional mandates and transparent electoral practices. This move comes at a crucial juncture, as Algeria continues to consolidate reforms aimed at bolstering institutional efficiency and public trust in governance. The renewal of the Council of the Nation also reflects the government’s intent to maintain stability while adapting to the nation’s dynamic political landscape.

The electoral convocation sets the stage for rigorous political engagement, with potential candidates preparing to secure the confidence of the electoral college. Political analysts view this as an opportunity for political parties and independent candidates to present forward-looking visions and policies that address regional and national concerns.

The March 2025 elections are expected to attract significant attention, both domestically and internationally, as they represent a vital aspect of Algeria’s institutional framework. The renewed Council of the Nation will be tasked with addressing critical legislative challenges, fostering regional development, and supporting Algeria’s strategic objectives on the global stage.
