Algiers, Algeria | August 13th, 2024 — On the third day of his visit to Algeria, which commenced on Sunday evening, Niger’s Prime Minister Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine was warmly received by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. This high-profile meeting marked a significant step in revitalizing the relationship between the two nations, with Prime Minister Zeine presenting a letter from Niger’s leader, General Abdourahmane Tiani, and engaging in extensive discussions with Algerian officials.
A Boost to Algeria-Niger Relations
The discussions aimed to reinvigorate the Algeria-Niger relationship were attended by prominent Algerian figures, including General Saïd Chanegriha, Chief of Staff of the People’s National Army; Ahmed Attaf, Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad; Boualem Boualem, Director of Cabinet at the Presidency; and other key government members. The reception was seen as a significant gesture of commitment from both countries to enhance their bilateral ties. Nigerien journalist Seidik Abba described the meeting as emblematic of the two countries’ dedication to strengthening their relationship, a sentiment echoed by the substantial ministerial delegation accompanying Prime Minister Zeine.
In a statement to the press following his meeting with President Tebboune, Prime Minister Zeine expressed a strong resolve to reinvigorate cooperation between the two nations. “We have decided to give a new impetus to our cooperation,” he declared, highlighting the importance of rapidly advancing joint projects that would benefit both Algeria and Niger. He emphasized the historical bonds between the nations, rooted in friendship, fraternity, and good neighborliness, and reaffirmed a commitment to future collaboration.
Historical Fraternal Relations and Future Prospects
Prime Minister Zeine’s visit follows an earlier trip to Niger by Algerian Energy and Mines Minister Mohamed Arkab, which focused on revitalizing energy cooperation, particularly through projects involving Sonatrach. Nadir Larbaoui noted President Tebboune’s keen interest in strengthening bilateral relations, reflecting the longstanding fraternal ties between Algeria and Niger.
Zeine underscored Niger’s dedication to this partnership, stressing the mutual benefits of cooperation with Algeria. He reiterated Niger’s commitment to bolstering bilateral ties to support both nations’ sovereignty, stability, and development while addressing regional challenges collectively.
Structural Projects and Future Cooperation
The discussions also highlighted a focus on structural projects and initiatives, particularly those funded by the Algerian Agency for International Cooperation for Solidarity and Development. With a budget of one billion dollars, this agency plays a pivotal role in fostering development across the continent, with Niger and Mali being priority areas.
In addition to ongoing solidarity projects, new prospects for cooperation were explored across various sectors. During their visit to Algiers, Nigerien ministers met with their Algerian counterparts in fields such as culture, communications, public works, industry, and commerce. These meetings aimed to review and relaunch stalled agreements, discuss new initiatives, and lay the groundwork for deeper bilateral integration and economic cooperation.
