Algiers, Algeria | February 6th, 2025 — On Thursday, the Minister of Internal Trade and Market Regulation, Tayeb Zitouni, assured the public that comprehensive measures have been put in place to ensure the stability and availability of essential consumer goods in the national market, particularly in anticipation of the upcoming Ramadan.
During a session before the Economic, Development, Industry, Trade, and Planning Committee at the People’s National Assembly, Minister Zitouni outlined proactive steps taken by his ministry since December last year to prepare for Ramadan. These measures include significant increases in the production of key goods and the implementation of an exceptional program to import meat. The specific actions include:
- A substantial boost in the production of edible oil and sugar,
- An exceptional import program for meat to meet expected demand,
- The continuation of supplementary quotas for supplying mills with hard wheat.
In addition, the ministry has planned the opening of 522 local markets across the country, with these markets set to begin operations in mid-February, two weeks ahead of Ramadan. This initiative aims to ensure local accessibility to goods at competitive prices during the holy month.
Minister Zitouni further emphasized the authorization of promotional sales and discounts on widely consumed products, a move aimed at alleviating economic pressure on Algerian households. Additionally, a solidarity program has been launched to support the national welfare sector, specifically in organizing the Ramadan food packages for 2025.
The Minister also unveiled a comprehensive “precautionary program” designed to avoid potential market disruptions. This initiative involves close coordination with the Ministries of Agriculture, Industry, Internal Affairs, and External Trade, as well as the active participation of professional associations. By engaging these sectors, the government aims to guarantee a steady and affordable supply of goods, ensuring a smooth market experience for Algerian citizens during Ramadan.
These anticipatory measures underscore the government’s commitment to enhancing national food security and supporting Algerian families during one of the most important periods of the year.
