Algiers, September 22, 2023 – In a significant stride towards bolstering its connections with African nations, Algerian national carrier Air Algérie unveiled its newest route, a direct air link connecting Algiers to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia’s capital city. The inaugural flight, marking this historic occasion, took to the skies on Thursday, September 21, 2023, with the Minister of Transport, Youcef Chorfa, and the Ethiopian Ambassador to Algiers, Mr. Nabiate Guetasho, gracing the ceremony.

This strategic initiative aligns seamlessly with the directives of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who has been at the forefront of promoting enhanced air and maritime links between Algeria and its African counterparts.

In his address during the inaugural flight ceremony, Minister Youcef Chorfa emphasized the profound significance of this new route within the broader framework of Air Algérie’s expansion plans, specifically targeting African nations. This expansion directive is in line with the vision of President Tebboune to strengthen Algeria’s global connectivity.

Furthermore, Minister Chorfa applauded the tireless efforts of the transport sector, highlighting its commitment to implementing strategies set forth by the highest authorities of the state. These efforts have collectively transformed Algiers International Airport into a pivotal hub and transit point, not only for Africa but also for destinations worldwide.

The Algiers – Addis Ababa route will be operational with two weekly flights on average. Notably, the addition of this Ethiopian connection brings the total number of weekly flights to African destinations serviced by Air Algérie to an impressive 23.

The Minister went on to underline the broader impact of expanding Air Algérie’s global network. This expansion is viewed as a significant contribution to the development and consolidation of cooperative relations between Algeria and nations worldwide. It is expected to facilitate the seamless movement of people and goods, thereby invigorating economic, social, and partnership opportunities within Algeria. These opportunities are anticipated to foster a vibrant and dynamic atmosphere, propelling Algeria towards a promising future.

Ethiopia and Algeria Renew Commitment to Elevate Bilateral Relations, Cooperation

In a resounding display of camaraderie and shared purpose, Ethiopia and the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria have reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to fortify their bilateral relations and boost cooperation. This renewed pledge was underscored by the Ethiopian Ambassador, Mr. Nabiate Guetasho, who has been instrumental in conducting periodic meetings with Algerian senior officials. The overarching objective of these meetings is to expand and invigorate the multifaceted cooperation between the two nations, transforming it into a tangible and impactful force on the international stage.

Ethiopia and Algeria share a rich history of diplomatic ties dating back to the late 1960s, a relationship that has continued to strengthen over the decades. The establishment of the Algerian Embassy in Addis Ababa marked a significant milestone, further cementing their diplomatic bond. Ethiopia reciprocated this gesture of goodwill in 2017 by opening its Embassy in Algiers, symbolizing their enduring commitment to mutual collaboration.

Algeria has emerged as a pivotal strategic partner for Ethiopia, and the evidence lies in the bilateral cooperation agreements inked between the two nations. These agreements span diverse sectors, encompassing trade, investment protection and promotion, and the prevention of double taxation. Moreover, Ethiopia and Algeria have enthusiastically embraced collaboration in the realms of science, culture, and technical fields, illustrating the breadth and depth of their partnership.

On numerous occasions, both nations have expressed their unequivocal resolve to push forward and delve deeper into cooperation across mutually beneficial domains. Their collective vision is to not only bolster their own relations, but also to make substantial contributions to the overall development of the African continent.

Regionally, Ethiopia and Algeria have emerged as influential players in resolving border conflicts and combatting terrorism in all its manifestations. Recognizing the gravity of terrorism as one of the most significant threats to global peace and security, both countries have diligently contributed to international efforts in this regard. Their responses to counterterrorism have been guided by the principles set forth by the Organization of African Unity (OAU) and subsequently embraced by the African Union (AU).

As the world faces a myriad of complex challenges, the reaffirmation of Ethiopia and Algeria’s commitment to elevate their bilateral relations and cooperation sends a clear message of unity, resolve, and solidarity. It underscores the power of diplomacy and collaboration in addressing global issues and fostering a more peaceful and prosperous world.

The Ethiopian Ambassador, Mr. Nabiate Guetasho, along with his Algerian counterparts, stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of friendship and cooperation between these two nations. Their unwavering dedication to nurturing this relationship promises to yield substantial benefits, not only for Ethiopia and Algeria but for the entire African continent and the international community as a whole.
