Algiers, Algeria | July 1st, 2024 — In a significant development, the Algiers Court announced the initiation of a judicial inquiry into corruption and public fund misappropriation within the Algerian Football Federation (FAF). This investigation targets 14 former officials, including ex-presidents and secretaries-general, along with three legal entities associated with the federation.

Background and Context

The investigation, prompted by the receipt of critical information regarding corrupt practices at FAF, aims to address accusations of intentional power abuse and financial mismanagement. According to the court’s communiqué, the primary focus is on the illicit awarding of contracts, contravening established procedural norms, which resulted in the unjust enrichment of certain individuals.

Scope of the Investigation

The preliminary inquiry, led by the Economic and Financial Brigade of the Algiers Police Department, encompasses a diverse group of suspects. Among those implicated are:

  • Three former presidents: Z.K., Z.J., and S.A.
  • Two former secretaries-general: D.M. and S.M.
  • The former general manager: A.A.
  • Three legal entities

Charges 

The suspects face serious charges including:

  1. Intentional abuse of power: Leveraging their positions to manipulate decisions and operations within FAF.
  2. Deliberate misappropriation of public funds: Utilizing federation resources for personal gain or the benefit of associates.
  3. Violation of legislative and regulatory provisions: Concluding contracts that bypass legal requirements to grant undue advantages to third parties.
  4. Participation in financial mismanagement: Collaborating with others in the federation to perpetuate these illegal activities.

The investigation also scrutinizes the broader implications of these actions, particularly the systemic breaches that facilitated such widespread misconduct.
