ALGIERS- The Algiers’ Journalists Association has strongly condemned the provocative remarks made by the French Foreign Minister, Catherine Colonna, regarding a section of the Algerian national anthem. The association emphasized that the national anthem holds immense significance as an expression of Algerian identity and the struggle for freedom. They underlined that it is a matter of sovereignty and insisted on the need for respect from the French side, considering the painful history between the two countries that continues to resonate through the anthem.

A Historical Symbol of Algerian Nation

In a statement issued by the Algiers’ Journalists Association, President Soulaimane Abdouche highlighted the importance of the national anthem as a historical symbol for the Algerian nation. The anthem is sung with pride and fervor in schools and various settings throughout the country, serving as a reminder of the struggle for independence and the determination of the Algerian people. It represents the nation’s identity and its unwavering pursuit of freedom.

The Association’s Response to Provocation

The association opened its statement by expressing its concern over the recurring provocative comments from certain French figures who harbor nostalgia for Algeria’s colonial past. The Algerian journalists denounced these individuals, describing their remarks as an attempt to undermine the national sovereignty of independent Algeria. They firmly stated that the time for admonition has passed and emphasized that the Algerian people were born free and will remain so.

Respect for Algerian Decision and Painful History

The Algiers Journalists Association emphasized that the national anthem holds great significance for Algeria, representing a painful history intertwined with the struggle against colonial ambitions. They stressed that no political party or external entity has the right to comment on the anthem, as it is a matter of Algerian sovereignty. The association called for respect from the French side and urged them to acknowledge the Algerian decision.

A Pragmatic Path Toward Mutual Respect

The association stated that Algeria has chosen a clear and pragmatic path, emphasizing the necessity of mutual respect in building equal diplomatic relations. They cautioned that any uncalculated diplomatic maneuver would only deepen the Algerian people’s connection to their history, which defied and resisted colonial ambitions, whether from France or its traditional allies. The Algerians’ commitment to their history remains steadfast and shapes their outlook on foreign relations.
