Algiers, Marseille Sign Cooperation Agreement in Urban Planning, Environment, and Sports

Algiers- Algeria, May 13, 2024 – Algiers, Algeria, and Marseille, France, have strengthened their ties through the signing of a cooperation agreement covering various areas, including urban planning, heritage conservation, environmental preservation, and sports. The agreement was signed on Monday in the presence of Mohamed Abdennour Rabehi, the Wali (Governor) of Algiers, and Mayor Benoit Payan of Marseille.
According to Rabehi, the cooperation agreement focuses on priority areas that could be expanded based on the needs of the populations of both cities. He emphasized the commitment to sustainable development in Algiers and Marseille, describing them as “majestic cities” of the Mediterranean. Rabehi also highlighted the launch of four urban development plans aimed at revitalizing Algiers’ urban fabric, modernizing transportation networks, and redesigning its waterfront, with the goal of establishing Algiers as a major Mediterranean capital.
During the signing ceremony, Mayor Payan praised the political will of both parties to strengthen cooperation through projects benefiting the citizens of these two major Mediterranean cities. As part of the visit to Algiers, the French delegation, led by Mayor Payan, will tour several landmarks, including the Basilica of Notre Dame d’Afrique, the Casbah, the Jardin d’Essais, the Museum of Fine Arts, and the Martyrs’ Sanctuary.
The cooperation between Algiers and Marseille reflects a mutual desire to exchange knowledge and experiences in various fields, promoting sustainable urban development, heritage preservation, and environmental conservation. The agreement also underscores the importance of cultural exchanges and tourism promotion between the two cities, contributing to the enhancement of their historical and cultural heritage.
