In a multi-sectoral coordination effort, the Port of Algiers activates a robust logistical and security plan to facilitate the smooth reception and distribution of sacrificial sheep ahead of Eid, ensuring accelerated vessel handling and green-lane clearance for outbound trucks
Algiers, Algeria | April 14th, 2025 — As Algeria prepares for the religious festivities of Eid al-Adha, the Port of Algiers has entered the final phase of logistical preparations to receive multiple livestock shipments designated for the national market. A high-level multi-sectoral delegation visited the port on Sunday to oversee and coordinate operational measures designed to ensure the swift and secure disembarkation and distribution of imported sheep.
According to an official statement issued by the Port of Algiers, a coordination meeting was held on-site with the participation of key stakeholders, including the Director of Transport for the Wilaya of Algiers, a representative of the Port Services Group (GSP), the Port Security Commissioner, the Head of the Customs Inspection Division, representatives from the agricultural and trade sectors, as well as executive managers of the port authority.
During the meeting, all parties agreed upon a comprehensive roadmap that will govern the management of the livestock unloading operation. This roadmap is set to take effect immediately upon the arrival of the first vessels, which are expected to dock in the coming days. The outlined strategy includes the following critical measures:
Berth 23 has been exclusively allocated for the reception of three vessels simultaneously, maximizing docking efficiency.
A “green lane” traffic corridor will be activated to facilitate the uninterrupted exit of livestock transport trucks, expediting the movement of animals to distribution points across the country.
A dedicated exit gate for trucks has been designated to optimize vehicle flow under controlled conditions, with provisions to open a second gate should operational demand increase.
On-site monitoring personnel will be deployed to oversee the unfolding process, ensuring rapid vessel processing in line with pre-set operational standards.
Pre-emptive administrative and security procedures have been implemented to govern port activity during this critical period, guaranteeing safety and transparency.
Stakeholders further agreed to reconvene once the first ship arrives, in order to reassess and adjust procedures as needed throughout the unfolding livestock handling operation.
Port officials affirmed the full readiness of both logistical infrastructure and human resources to ensure the successful execution of the livestock reception mission under optimal conditions. The operation is being carried out in close coordination with all relevant port actors and national authorities, in accordance with facilitation measures decreed by the Algerian government to support citizens’ needs ahead of the Eid celebrations.
