Algiers, Algeria | July 30th, 2024 — In a significant diplomatic response, Algeria has recalled its ambassador to Paris following France’s recent endorsement of Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara. The French government’s recognition of the Moroccan proposal as the “only basis” for resolving the Western Sahara conflict has been interpreted by Algeria as an endorsement of colonialism in the region.
Diplomatic Consequences: Algeria’s Official Response
Algeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad released a statement denouncing the French government’s stance as a major and unexpected shift in policy. “The French government’s explicit and categorical support for the colonial imposition in Western Sahara represents a departure from established positions previously maintained by French administrations. This current stance reflects a profound lack of consideration for the potential diplomatic repercussions,” the statement declares.
The Ministry condemned the French position for contravening international legality and undermining the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination. “By recognizing the Moroccan autonomy plan as the sole framework for resolving the Western Sahara conflict within the context of Morocco’s purported sovereignty, the French government is in direct violation of international law. This action disregards the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination, diverges from the longstanding and patient efforts of the United Nations to complete the decolonization of Western Sahara, and shirks its responsibilities as a permanent member of the Security Council,” the statement asserts.
