Algiers, April 9, 2024 – The ongoing consultations between Algeria and the United States regarding the situation in the Gaza Strip continued yesterday, Monday, with a discussion between Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf and his American counterpart, Secretary of State Anthony Blinken.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad, Minister Ahmed Attaf received a phone call from Secretary of State Anthony Blinken concerning the developments in the Palestinian issue.

The discussions between the two parties focused on the evolving situation in the occupied Palestinian territories, particularly in the Gaza Strip, as outlined in the statement.

During their conversation, Attaf and Blinken placed particular emphasis on the ongoing discussions at the Security Council regarding the prospects of Palestine’s accession as a full member of the United Nations.

This meeting comes on the same day as the opening of discussions at the UN Security Council on the Palestinian state’s request for full UN membership. A matter on which the Security Council is expected to make a decision by the end of this month.

It is worth noting that the last meeting between Attaf and Blinken took place just hours before the Security Council vote on Algeria’s resolution for a ceasefire during the month of Ramadan in Gaza. The United States abstained from the vote, having previously vetoed numerous attempts to pass a resolution calling for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
