ALGIERS, January 3, 2024 – Algeria commenced its fourth term as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the period 2024-2025 on Tuesday. During the inaugural ceremony, the permanent representatives of the five newly elected countries to the Security Council placed their respective national flags. Ambassador Amar Bendjama, the Permanent Representative of Algeria to the United Nations, highlighted Algeria’s priorities and commitments to peace and security globally.

In his address, Amar Bendjama reaffirmed “the unwavering commitment of Algerian diplomacy, under the instructions of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, to actively contribute to promoting the values of peace and the virtues of dialogue to overcome differences and strengthen international cooperation,” as per the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad.

Throughout its term, Algeria “will raise the voice of oppressed peoples under colonial domination to realize their right to self-determination” and “will work to strengthen multilateralism, defend the rules and principles of international law, particularly the principle of peaceful conflict resolution in accordance with the United Nations Charter,” added Amar Bendjama.

Denouncing the “growing threats to international peace and security, reaching their peak with heinous war crimes committed against the defenseless Palestinian people for nearly three months,” Amar Bendjama stated that “the Palestinian issue will be the absolute priority of our country at the Security Council,” and “Algeria will strive to end the genocide suffered by the Palestinian people, demanding an immediate and permanent ceasefire and commitment to a peaceful settlement process.”

According to the Permanent Representative of Algeria to the United Nations, “the time has come to grant the Palestinian people their legitimate rights to establish their independent state with Jerusalem as its capital.”

It’s worth noting that this marks Algeria’s fourth term on the UN Security Council, following its mandates in 1968-1969, 1988-1989, 2004-2005, and now, 2024-2025. France currently holds the presidency of the Security Council for January, with the situation in the Middle East, the war in Ukraine, and crises in Africa as its priorities.
