Algiers, Algeria | July 27th, 2024 — On Friday, Amar Bendjama, Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, addressed the UN Security Council, underscoring the urgent need to resolve the dire situation in Gaza, which has endured nearly ten months of severe aggression. Bendjama asserted that the only feasible solution is to uphold the Palestinian people’s right to establish an independent state with El Quds (Jerusalem) as its capital.
“United in Hope: Beyond Sympathy for Gaza”
Speaking at the session titled “The Situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian Question,” organized by Algeria, China, and Russia, Bendjama highlighted that addressing the Gaza crisis is both a moral duty and a historical obligation. He stressed the importance of transcending mere sympathy to deliver real support and action.
“This meeting is a beacon of hope,” Bendjama remarked. “It signifies our collective commitment to setting aside differences and focusing on our shared humanity. However, hope alone cannot suffice; the people of Gaza require more than our empathy.”
“Call to Action”
Bendjama condemned the “deliberate Zionist policies” that hinder the delivery and distribution of humanitarian aid to Gaza. According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), only 86 trucks per day have managed to enter Gaza during the first two weeks of July. He pointed out the severe impact on healthcare, with hospitals and clinics in ruins and the emergence of a new epidemic.
In his concluding remarks, Bendjama reiterated the necessity for the international community to take decisive action to alleviate the humanitarian crisis and support the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital.
