ALGIERS– In its latest report on terrorism in the world, the United States praised Algeria’s efforts in the fight against terrorism, as well as the partnership relations it has established with the United States in this area.

The document praised the ongoing counter-terrorism operations in Algeria, which have resulted in the arrest and elimination of suspected terrorists, the dismantling and disruption of terrorist cells, as well as the destruction of hiding places and weapons and other equipment.

The report also highlighted the qualitative operations carried out by Algeria to fight terrorism, in particular those which eliminated prominent leaders and members of terrorist groups.

The report also noted that Algeria remained a country with few terrorist activities, particularly Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) and its allied groups, the Islamic State branch in Algeria, as well as local groups.

The report also commended Algeria’s efforts to combat the trafficking of human beings, arms and drugs, as well as the measures taken by the North African country to strengthen its border security in close cooperation with Tunisia. The report also noted the establishment in September 2021 of the National Passenger Information Registration Unit to process and store international passengers to prevent and combat terrorism and organized crime.

The report also underlined that Algeria continues to actively participate in the branches of the United Nations, such as; the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and the Office of Counter-Terrorism, as well as in international, multilateral and regional organizations. Algeria also continues to chair the executive committee of the peace agreement in Mali and support the United Nations political process in Libya.

The American report recognized the pioneering role played by Algeria in the field of the fight against terrorism and African Union issues, since it hosts in Algiers the headquarters of “Afripol”, the Center for and Research on Terrorism and the African Union Peace and Security Council.

In conclusion, the report welcomed the adoption of Algeria’s proposed “action plan” to address the growing threats of violent extremism in the Sahel.

Algeria continues to support the UN political process in Libya and has hosted and participated in various Sahelian and Saharan forums to discuss development and security policies and the evolution of regional terrorism. The report highlighted that Algeria is an important partner in the fight against terrorism in the region.
