Algeria’s Resounding Victory Exposes Rabat’s Waning Influence in Africa

Algiers, Algeria | February 13th, 2025 — In a major diplomatic setback, Morocco failed in its bid to secure a seat on the African Union’s Peace and Security Council (PSC), suffering a resounding defeat at the hands of Algeria, which emerged victorious with 30 votes in the decisive sixth round. Morocco, on the other hand, managed to garner only 17 votes, despite resorting to financial incentives and aggressive lobbying tactics.

The outcome of the vote, held as part of the African Union’s leadership selection process, highlights Algeria’s strong and growing influence within the continental body, while simultaneously exposing Morocco’s diminishing credibility in African diplomatic circles. Despite Rabat’s attempts to conceal its failure, the reality has quickly spread across AU headquarters, with discussions centering on Morocco’s continued reliance on bribery and covert dealings to secure political influence.

A Resounding Defeat Amid Corruption Allegations

Morocco’s electoral defeat comes amid widespread accusations of bribery, with numerous African diplomats openly criticizing Rabat’s unethical attempts to sway votes in its favor. According to APS sources within the AU, Moroccan officials engaged in extensive financial transactions and backdoor negotiations, yet failed to gain the necessary support.

One AU diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated:

“The days when Morocco could buy influence within the African Union are over. Member states are increasingly aware of its tactics, and there is a growing sense of discontent regarding its approach to African diplomacy.”

Algeria’s Growing Leadership in Africa

Algeria’s landslide victory in this PSC election underscores its firm position as a key actor in African security and diplomacy. The country has long been recognized for its principled foreign policy, its commitment to regional stability, and its dedication to multilateralism within the AU.

By securing overwhelming support in the latest vote, Algeria has reaffirmed its strategic role in shaping Africa’s security architecture and addressing critical issues such as peacekeeping, conflict resolution, and counterterrorism efforts.

Algerian diplomatic sources emphasized that the victory reflects trust and confidence in Algeria’s consistent engagement with African partners.

Morocco’s Obsession with Undermining Algeria

Observers note that Morocco’s diplomatic failures within the AU stem largely from its fixation on countering Algeria’s influence, rather than presenting its own constructive policy agenda. Over the past few years, Rabat has prioritized efforts to obstruct Algeria’s diplomatic achievements, often at the expense of broader African interests.

A senior African diplomat commented:

“Instead of working for the collective good, Morocco seems obsessed with blocking Algeria’s progress. This strategy is not only ineffective but also damaging to its own standing within the AU.”

Morocco’s Declining Influence in the AU

The PSC election marks yet another embarrassing setback for Morocco within the AU, as it continues to face diplomatic isolation from many African states. Several of its traditional allies have distanced themselves, recognizing that Rabat’s approach lacks substance and long-term vision.

This trend signals a significant shift within the AU, as an increasing number of nations reject Morocco’s attempts to manipulate African diplomacy through financial incentives and misinformation.

A Clear Message from Africa

The AU’s rejection of Morocco’s bid sends a clear message: African nations are increasingly prioritizing transparency, credibility, and genuine leadership over political maneuvering and financial influence.

As the dust settles on this diplomatic confrontation, Algeria emerges as the clear and decisive victor, reaffirming its historic role as a leader in African affairs, while Morocco is left grappling with yet another diplomatic embarrassment.

This election serves as a stark reminder that Africa’s future belongs to nations that work for unity and progress—not those that seek to divide, manipulate, and obstruct.
