ALGIERS, ALGERIA | May 26, 2024 — Participants at the 36th Congress of the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union (AIPU) have commended Algeria’s persistent efforts to secure full UN membership for the State of Palestine. Meeting at the Abdelatif-Rahal International Conference Center, delegates expressed confidence that Algeria’s unwavering commitment will ultimately achieve this goal.
In a statement to APS on the sidelines of the Congress, Palestinian Ambassador to Algeria, Fayez Abu Aita, lauded the resolution proposed by Algeria on behalf of the Arab Group at the United Nations Security Council, seeking Palestine’s full-fledged membership. Although the resolution faced a US veto, Abu Aita remained optimistic that such obstacles will eventually be overcome by Algeria’s steadfast determination. He also praised the honorable stances of countries like Spain, Norway, and Ireland, which have recently recognized the State of Palestine, encouraging other nations to follow suit.
AIPU observer, Ben Mohamed Tidjani Al-Katari Maher, emphasized the significant impact of global public and Arab media pressure on altering international positions regarding the Palestinian cause. He called for enhanced Arab cooperation and coordination, stressing the importance of meetings, debates, and the creation of advocacy groups to raise awareness about the Palestinian cause in Western countries using modern technologies and available resources.
Algeria’s Commitment to Arab Causes
Ahmed Baaboud, the new Secretary-General of the AIPU, highlighted the efforts of Arab Parliaments to strengthen cooperation for the Palestinian cause. He expressed hope for an end to the aggression against Palestinians and commended Algeria for consistently championing Arab issues, particularly the Palestinian cause. Baaboud praised the excellent organization and extensive media coverage of the Congress, reflecting Algeria’s deep commitment to these issues.
Khalid Bin Hilal Bin Nasser Al Maawali, President of the Omani Consultative Council, underscored the imperative for Arab Parliaments and peoples to intensify their support for the Palestinian people. He acknowledged Algeria’s efforts, as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, in advocating for Palestine. Al Maawali also celebrated the cooperative and fraternal relations between Algeria and Oman, noting the high level of coordination between the two nations on various matters.
The two-day Congress focuses on the current situation in the Arab world and the Palestinian cause amidst the ongoing genocidal war against Palestinians, especially in Gaza. The agenda includes restructuring permanent committees and conducting sessions and meetings of the Palestine Committee, the Committee on Social Affairs, Women and Children, and the Committee on Political Affairs and Parliamentary Relations.
