Algiers, Algeria | September 10th, 2024 — In a momentous decision with potentially far-reaching consequences, Arab foreign ministers, convened in Cairo, have unanimously agreed to initiate the process of suspending the Zionist entity’s membership in the United Nations General Assembly. According to diplomatic sources, Arab representatives in New York will formally submit the suspension request to the President of the General Assembly, who will forward it to the Credentials Committee at the upcoming UN session.
Key to this effort is the July 19, 2024, advisory opinion issued by the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which called on the international community to take decisive steps to end the Zionist entity’s illegal actions in the occupied Palestinian territories. This legal backing has fortified Arab nations’ resolve, with many seeing it as a crucial moment to galvanize global support and pressure the UN into taking action.
At the forefront of this initiative is Algeria, whose Foreign Minister, Ahmed Attaf, has been a vocal advocate for intensifying diplomatic measures against the Zionist regime. Attaf has led efforts both within the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to hold the entity accountable, emphasizing the need for unified action on the international stage. Under his leadership, Arab states have coordinated their campaign to rally international backing, framing the suspension as a necessary step in upholding the principles of justice and peace.
