Arab Summit: Guterres confirms his presence, hails Algeria’s “exceptional” contribution to multilateral world diplomacy

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres confirmed on Monday his presence at the Arab Summit in Algiers, scheduled for November 1 and 2, hailing Algeria’s “exceptional” contribution to multilateral world diplomacy.

At the end of his meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, Ramtane Lamamra, who handed him the letter of invitation sent by the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune to attend the Arab Summit in Algiers as guest of honor, Mr. Guterres expressed his “deep gratitude to Mr. President accepting his invitation to attend the work of this deadline which coincides with the celebration of the 68th anniversary of the outbreak of the glorious War of release”.

At the end of his participation in the work of the high-level component of the 77th General Assembly (GA) of the United Nations (UN), held in New York, the head of Algerian diplomacy held a working session with the SG of the UN, Mr. Antonio Guterres.

During this audience, the two parties reviewed the cooperative relations between Algeria and the United Nations as well as the latest international and regional developments, in particular the efforts made by Algeria to promote peace and stability in Libya. , in Mali and in the Sahelo-Saharan region, in addition to its efforts aimed at consolidating Palestinian national unity and resuming the peace process in the Middle East through the relaunch of the Arab peace initiative.

In this context, the Secretary-General hailed Algeria’s “exceptional contribution to the United Nations and to multilateral world diplomacy, in the service of the objectives of peace and stability and for the settlement of conflicts by peaceful means and promotion of friendly relations between countries”.

The two parties also discussed “the prospects for completing the process of decolonization of Western Sahara, in the light of the continued efforts of the United Nations under the leadership of the personal representative of the Secretary-General, Staffan de Mistura to bring the parties to the conflict , two Member States of the African Union (AU), namely the Kingdom of Morocco and the Sahrawi and Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), to continue direct negotiations with a view to reaching a lasting, equitable and acceptable solution for both parties, a solution that guarantees the inalienable and imprescriptible right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination and independence”.

The Head of Algerian diplomacy had talks with the Deputy Secretary General of the UN, Ms Amina Mohammed, with whom he examined “several points inherent in the cooperation and coordination between Algeria and the UN in the framework of the application of the 2030 agenda and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, in addition to the fight against climate change”.

Mrs. Amina Mohammed expressed “her interest in the national development program launched by the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune”, wishing for more cooperation between Algeria and the UN in this area”.
