Algiers, Algeria | January 26th, 2025 — On January 28, 2025, Mohamed Arkab, Algeria’s Minister of State and Minister of Energy, Mines, and Renewable Energies, will represent President Abdelmadjid Tebboune at the African Heads of State Summit on Energy in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The summit, organized under the theme “Lighting Up Africa: The Transformative Power of Mission 300,” is an initiative spearheaded by the African Development Bank (AfDB) in collaboration with the World Bank and the African Union. The gathering will bring together African heads of state, regional and international banking institutions, private sector players, energy experts, civil society organizations, and academic representatives to address Africa’s energy crisis and explore solutions for the future.
In the run-up to the summit, several ministerial sessions and workshops will be held on January 27, 2025, designed to advance the “Mission 300” initiative, which aims to provide electricity access to 300 million people across Africa by 2030. This ambitious goal seeks to combat the ongoing energy shortage that currently affects more than 600 million Africans, limiting their access to essential resources like electricity and clean cooking energy.
The summit will be a crucial platform for discussing the most viable strategies for ensuring secure, reliable, and sustainable energy access for all African nations. It will also aim to promote the use of renewable energy sources, attract private investments, and foster regional cooperation in addressing energy challenges. At the conclusion of the summit, the “Dar es Salaam Energy Declaration” will be signed, committing African leaders to increase energy access, accelerate the adoption of renewables, and stimulate private sector involvement in the energy sector.
Algeria’s participation in this summit is particularly significant, as the country has long been a leader in energy production on the African continent. In addition to discussions on Algeria’s extensive energy capacity, the country will present its national plans to integrate regional electricity networks, develop solar energy infrastructure, and foster the growth of microgrids. These initiatives will play a vital role in ensuring that remote and underserved areas gain access to energy in a sustainable and cost-effective manner.
As part of Algeria’s involvement, Minister Arkab will take part in a key ministerial session titled “Policies and Reforms to Transform the Energy Sector in Africa,” where he will highlight Algeria’s vision and its pivotal role in advancing Africa’s energy agenda. He will showcase Algeria’s extensive energy program, which focuses on electricity production, cross-border energy connectivity, and major projects in solar energy and green hydrogen. Minister Arkab’s presentation will underscore Algeria’s potential to provide innovative energy solutions that support the continent’s efforts to ensure access to affordable and clean energy for all.
Algeria’s leadership will be further illustrated by its contributions through its national energy companies, Sonatrach and Sonelgaz, which have played a crucial role in supporting African nations in developing their energy infrastructures. Additionally, Algeria has been at the forefront of training and capacity-building initiatives, offering specialized training for African professionals in the energy sector.
The African Energy Summit in Tanzania underscores Algeria’s unwavering commitment to regional initiatives aimed at eradicating energy poverty across the continent. Through its proactive participation, Algeria aims to strengthen regional and international partnerships, enhance the energy security of African nations, and contribute significantly to the achievement of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those related to affordable and clean energy.
