ALGIERS- The Minister of Energy and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, stated on Monday that Touggourt will become one of the most significant electricity-producing wilayas (provinces) thanks to various investment projects that have been realized and those still underway.
During his working visit to the wilaya, Arkab mentioned projects such as the development program initiated by the Sonelgaz Group to increase the overall production capacity, which is expected to exceed 3,000 megawatts (MW) by 2026-2027.
Currently, the wilaya of Touggourt already has a capacity of 1,100 MW, which adequately meets local energy needs, estimated at 670 MW during the summer period.
Expressing his satisfaction with the progress made in Touggourt, Arkab noted that the electricity and natural gas coverage rates in the area are respectively estimated at 97% and 84%.
Arkab Launches Construction of a 150 MW Solar Plant
Among the significant projects underway is the construction of a 150 MW photovoltaic solar plant, for which the minister laid the foundation stone.
According to the ministry’s statement, the construction of this future energy installation, spanning a total area of 300 hectares in the El-Anète region, the wilaya’s capital, has been entrusted to the national company Cosider.
This project is part of the “Solar 1000 MW” project, which aims to establish five photovoltaic solar power plants with capacities ranging from 50 to 300 MW across five different wilayas.
Arkab also inaugurated a 10/60 kilovolt (kV) electrical transformation center in the locality of Béni Djallèb, aimed at strengthening the region’s power supply and relieving pressure on the main power plant.
