Algiers- Algeria, May 7, 2024 – Aroldo Curzi Mattei, President of the Enrico-Mattei Foundation, expressed significant interest among Italian businesses in investing in Algeria, particularly in agricultural and agro-industrial sectors.

Mattei stressed the importance of “respect” and “transparency” as fundamental elements of the working relationship between Italy, represented by the Mattei Foundation, and Algeria during his visit to the Algerian Investment Promotion Agency (AAPI). He identified several sectors that Italian investors find appealing in Algeria, such as agro-industrial activities, dairy production, biodiesel production, health, and robotics.

Mattei described the business climate in Algeria as “magnificent,” reflecting positive sentiments among Italian investors. Algeria and Italy have notably strengthened their relations in recent years, with high-level visits between officials of both countries. Visits by President Sergio Mattarella, Giorgia Meloni, and Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to Italy have further consolidated these ties.

While cooperation in the energy sector remains strong, with Eni being the largest foreign investor in Algeria’s hydrocarbon sector, Mattei stressed the importance of developing a robust industrial policy between the two countries beyond energy. The automotive industry serves as a successful example of this cooperation, with Fiat being the first global company to enter the Algerian market, followed by other brands, encouraged by Algeria’s updated legal framework in the automotive sector.

Italy’s involvement in agriculture, through companies like Best Food, aims to contribute to Algeria’s food security by investing in wheat production and processing projects. Plans to revive the Agusta Westland helicopter production project demonstrate the commitment of Algeria and Italy to economic cooperation across various sectors.

Algeria’s economic potential and strategic location make it an attractive partner for Italy, often described as a “bridge to Africa” by Italian officials. Beyond economic ties, Algeria and Italy maintain a deep and transparent friendship, rooted in historical connections dating back to the liberation war, as highlighted by President Tebboune in a previous interview.
