Attaf Holds Bilateral Talks with Mauritanian Counterpart in Beijing Ahead of Sino-African Summit

Algiers, Algeria | September 4th, 2024 — Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf engaged in a dialogue on Wednesday with his Mauritanian counterpart, Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, and Mauritanians Abroad, on the sidelines of the ministerial meeting of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).

During their discussions, Ministers Attaf and Ould Merzoug exchanged insights and coordinated their positions on key issues and topics that will be addressed at the upcoming China-Africa Summit, which is set to commence on Thursday. The conversation also included an in-depth exchange of views regarding recent developments and challenges at both regional and continental levels, according to a statement released by the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad.

The dialogue between the two officials reflects a shared commitment to enhancing cooperation and ensuring that the interests of both nations are effectively represented during the summit. Their meeting underscores the importance of collaboration in addressing the complex geopolitical and economic issues facing Africa today.

In a separate meeting, Minister Attaf also conferred with Ma Zhaoxu, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China. This meeting focused on reviewing the state of Algerian-Chinese relations and exploring opportunities for further strengthening bilateral ties. Both sides reiterated their dedication to advancing the strategic outcomes of the state visit by Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to China in July 2023. This visit, which significantly bolstered economic cooperation between the two nations, laid the groundwork for deepening political alignments and fostering long-term partnerships.

The discussions in Beijing highlight Algeria’s proactive diplomatic efforts to fortify its international relations and to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Sino-African cooperation. As the China-Africa Summit approaches, Algeria and Mauritania, alongside China, are poised to contribute to a more unified and prosperous African continent, in line with their shared aspirations and strategic goals.
