Addis Ababa, February 16, 2024 – Continuing his series of discussions with counterparts from numerous countries on the sidelines of his participation in the 44th session of the African Union, Minister of Foreign Affairs Ahmed Attaf held bilateral talks on Friday with the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation of the Republic of South Africa, Ms. Naledi Pandor.
According to a statement from the ministry, the two parties discussed various issues, including the ongoing genocide against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip. They commended South Africa’s judicial initiatives before the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which align with Algeria’s relentless diplomatic efforts at the United Nations Security Council.
The ministry explained that the aim of this collaboration is to activate the provisional measures issued by the ICJ and achieve common objectives, such as halting Zionist aggression, protecting civilians, and ensuring unhindered humanitarian aid delivery.
The objective is also to work towards a lasting solution to the Palestinian issue, in accordance with international legality and resolutions.
Reaffirmed Support for UN Efforts in Western Sahara
During the meeting, the two ministers also discussed the latest developments in the Western Sahara issue and reiterated their support for the United Nations Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy, Mr. Staffan De Mistura. They expressed support for their efforts to reinvigorate the political process aimed at resolving the Western Sahara conflict and allowing the Sahrawi people to exercise their inalienable and imprescriptible right to self-determination.
The meeting also served as an opportunity to coordinate on key agenda items for the AU Summit scheduled for February 17th and 18th.
The discussions underscored the importance of international cooperation and solidarity in addressing pressing regional and global challenges, particularly those related to peace, security, and human rights.
