ALGIERS- Mokdad Aggoune, the Director of Economic Intelligence at the Ministry of Industry and Pharmaceutical Production, revealed that the ministry’s services have received 127 applications related to vehicle imports as of last Thursday.
Speaking at the El-Moudjahid Forum on Monday, Mokdad Aggoune emphasized that 41 licenses, including twelve specialized in the marketing of passenger cars, have so far received final approval as vehicle dealers.
In the last 10 months, the ministry’s services received 127 import requests for various types of vehicles (passenger cars, utility vehicles, motorcycles, and tractors), with 80 receiving preliminary authorization and 41 obtaining final approvals.
Aggoune specified that 75% of the licenses were granted to Asian brands, with 25% going to European brands, noting the presence of only one Japanese brand, Suzuki.
Regarding vehicle imports in 2023, he revealed that during the year, “180,000 vehicles were imported, amounting to 1.9 billion US dollars.”
However, this import process will undergo evaluation. Aggoune warned, “There are surprises. Some have not imported any vehicles despite receiving a financial allocation, while others have exceeded the prescribed quota. Once the audit is completed, we will take the necessary measures.”
Aggoune also disclosed that brands like “Kia, Toyota, Nissan, and the French brand Citroën have received preliminary authorization.”
Regarding the automotive manufacturing dossier, he stated that Fiat began production on December 11, 2023. He added, “Chery has submitted its file to the Bordj Bou Arreridj province,” while JAC will be located in Ain Temouchent, Hyundai aims to establish itself in Oran, and Geely has chosen Médéa.
“We have more than 30 vehicle manufacturer files under study,” he emphasized, adding that “the authorities want to move towards genuine industrialization that creates wealth, jobs, and has an impact on society.”
Addressing the issue of integration, Aggoune referred to the specifications that stipulate an integration rate “of 10% at the end of the second year, then 20%, and 30% in the fifth year.” He emphasized that “if the economic operator reaches the integration rate of 10%, he will benefit from numerous tax reductions.”
