Automotive: Oran’s Fiat factory to generate 600 direct jobs for August, 2,000 for next three years

ALGIERS- The construction project for the car factory of the Italian brand Fiat  in Tafraoui (Oran) will be delivered at the end of next August, announced, on Monday, the province Governor (Wali), Said Sayoud , noting that the pace of work is “satisfactory”.

Stellantis provided all the capabilities to deliver the project on time, Said Sayoud added in a statement to the press on the sidelines of an inspection visit to the project by officials from the Ministry of Industry and Pharmaceutical Production, in the presence of Ahmed Zayed Salem, adviser to the minister and the director of Stellantis in charge of the MENA (Middle-East & North Africa) region, Samir Cherfan and the Algerian ambassador to Italy, Abdelkrim Touahria, reported the APS agency.

The Wali of Oran explained that the project provides for two buildings, the realization of the first has reached a progress rate of 85% and the second 30%, indicating that the external development works have been launched and the rate of progress varies from one site to another.

Regarding the various networks, he indicated that the connection of the plant to the electricity, telephone and Internet networks is 100% complete, pending its water supply as soon as possible, noting that the project is connected to the sanitation via El Kerma wastewater treatment plant.

Said Sayoud specified that the industrial zone of Tafraoui will reserve 40 hectares to house local suppliers and subcontracting companies in the automotive field, which represents an opportunity for those who wish to invest in this field.

For his part, the director of Stellantis in charge of the MENA (Middle-East & North Africa) region, Samir Cherfan, said that the plant will generate up to 600 direct jobs from its launch and should reach 2,000 jobs in the next three years.

For the investment in the Oran Fiat car manufacturing plant, the Stellantis Group injected 200 million euros as part of a first tranche, to start in a first phase in the production of four models, including the Fiat 500 and the Fiat Doblo.

The adviser to the Minister of Industry and Pharmaceutical Production, Ahmed Zayed Salem stressed that the support program for SMEs is part of the agreement program with the partner Fiat. The integration rate in this project will reach 30% in 2026. It concerns sheet metal, bodywork, paint and accessories, such as; seats, cables, steering wheel, plastic sheaths, casing, batteries, shock absorbers, tires.

As a reminder, the marketing operation of the first Italian Fiat brand cars in Algeria was launched on Sunday in Algiers, during a ceremony organized by Stellantis Algeria in the presence of the Minister of Industry and Pharmaceutical Production, Ali Aoun , the Minister of Trade and Export Promotion, Tayeb Zitouni, the Italian Ambassador to Algeria, Giovanni Pugliese and the Algerian Ambassador to Italy, Abdelkrim Touahria.

In addition, executives from the Ministry of Industry and Pharmaceutical Production and the Stellantis company visited the Tosyali steel complex in the daira of Bethioua (east of Oran), which launched the construction of a sheet metal factory steel with a production capacity of 2 million tons per year.

The member of the Board of Directors of the complex, Alp Topcuoglu affirmed that this production will be destined towards the satisfaction of the local needs of the automotive industry, household appliances and pipes and export.
