Algiers, Algeria | November 30th, 2024 — In a powerful address during the 48th edition of the European Coordination Conference of Support and Solidarity with the Sahrawi People (EUCOCO), held in Lisbon, Portugal, Said Ayachi, President of the National Committee for Solidarity with the Sahrawi People (CNASPS), denounced the ongoing Moroccan occupation of Western Sahara and outlined the concerted efforts by the occupying power to subvert international law. Ayachi emphasized the role of the EUCOCO as a critical platform for revealing Morocco’s continued violations and the complicity of certain international powers that shield its actions.
The event, hosted by the University of Lisbon, is centered around four key workshops focusing on media and politics, human rights, support for the Sahrawi state, and the ongoing exploitation of Sahrawi resources. According to Ayachi, these workshops will serve as the backbone of the conference, providing essential analysis and actionable strategies to advance the Sahrawi cause into 2025.
Morocco’s Unyielding Occupation and Its International Manipulations
Ayachi highlighted that the workshops would provide critical insight into Morocco’s ongoing efforts to avoid compliance with international law, particularly regarding the legal status of the Sahrawi question. He underscored Morocco’s strategy of imposing faits accomplis in occupied Sahrawi territories, employing illegal practices such as bribing local leaders and initiating investment projects that further entrench the occupation. These actions, Ayachi argued, are designed to gain the tacit approval of certain Western and African countries, enabling the ongoing pillaging of Sahrawi resources.
In his address, Ayachi reflected on the recent victories achieved by the Sahrawi cause, including landmark rulings by the European Court of Justice (ECJ) that reaffirm the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination and the invalidity of Morocco’s claims over the territory. He stressed that these legal victories, supported by international organizations, would continue to underpin the movement’s advocacy for the Sahrawi people. The CNASPS, Ayachi emphasized, now uses international law as its primary tool in denouncing Morocco’s severe human rights violations against Sahrawi civilians, who are peacefully demanding their rights in the occupied territories.
Complicity of International Powers and Media Blackout
The CNASPS President also condemned the failure of the United Nations Security Council to take decisive action to enforce international law and compel Morocco to comply with its legal obligations. He attributed this inaction to the complicity of certain global powers, who continue to provide Morocco with diplomatic and political protection, thus undermining efforts to resolve the issue through legal channels.
Furthermore, Ayachi criticized Morocco’s imposition of a media blackout on the Sahrawi issue, facilitated by international media networks influenced by the Zionist entity, a close ally of the Moroccan regime. He emphasized the growing importance of social media as a vital tool for spreading awareness about the dire situation in the occupied Sahrawi territories. These platforms, he noted, are instrumental in conveying the true extent of the suffering faced by the Sahrawi people while countering the Moroccan propaganda that seeks to strip the issue of its legal and political significance.
Urgent Call for Continued Mobilization
Ayachi’s call to action was unequivocal: the international community must respect and uphold international law, the cornerstone of peaceful relations between nations. He called on all actors within the solidarity movement to intensify their efforts and apply sustained pressure on the UN Security Council to restore the Sahrawi cause to its rightful legal context—one rooted in decolonization.
Additionally, Ayachi praised the strong participation of the Algerian delegation at the conference, which he described as sending a clear message of Algeria’s unwavering commitment to the Sahrawi struggle. He stressed that Algeria’s role in supporting the Sahrawi people, deeply embedded in the principles of the November Revolution, remains resolute despite attempts to undermine its efforts on the continental, regional, and international levels.
In conclusion, Ayachi reiterated that the fight for Sahrawi self-determination is far from over. With the collective strength of international solidarity movements and the continuous legal and diplomatic challenges to Moroccan occupation, the Sahrawi people remain hopeful for a future grounded in peace, justice, and sovereignty.
