Algiers, Algeria | September 22nd, 2024 — On Sunday morning, nearly 12 million students across Algeria’s three educational cycles—primary, middle, and secondary—returned to classrooms for the 2024-2025 school year. Marking this significant moment, the Minister of National Education, Abdelhakim Belaabed, officially inaugurated the new academic year from Salah-Ould Aoudia Primary School in Ben Aknoun (Algiers), where he attended the first class dedicated to road safety awareness. This theme, chosen for its importance in educating students on the risks associated with road accidents, underscores the vital role schools play in fostering safety consciousness.
In preparation for the new school year, the Ministry of National Education implemented several key pedagogical measures. One of the most notable changes is the restructuring of subjects and schedules for first and second-year primary students, aimed at lightening the curriculum and making more room for cultural, sports, and artistic activities. These initiatives are designed to develop students’ skills in these disciplines, enriching their educational experience beyond traditional academic learning.
The primary objective remains to provide students with essential knowledge, especially in languages and mathematics, while also emphasizing manual, technical, religious, moral, and physical education. As part of these efforts, Minister Belaabed announced a significant increase in the hours allocated for sports and artistic activities in primary schools. The time dedicated to these activities will rise from 7% to 20%, with an additional hour of physical education, bringing the total to two hours per week. Moreover, 45 minutes will be added for artistic education, totaling one and a half hours weekly. Mathematics instruction will also be strengthened, with an extra 30 minutes per week dedicated to the subject.
As a result, the updated weekly schedule for primary education will consist of 21 hours, distributed as follows: 11 hours for Arabic language, 5 hours for mathematics, 1.5 hours for Islamic education, 1.5 hours for artistic education, and 2 hours for physical and sports education.
In line with the government’s commitment to modernizing education, 1,700 primary schools will be equipped with digital tablets this year, raising the total number of schools utilizing this technology to 5,000 nationwide. This move is part of Algeria’s broader push towards integrating digital tools into the learning environment.
The teaching of English is also being expanded, with the introduction of English language instruction in the fifth year of primary school. Additionally, the government continues to generalize preschool education, ensuring early access to learning opportunities for young children.
Further demonstrating its commitment to academic excellence, the state will continue promoting mathematics and math-technical streams, encouraging students to pursue these fields based on their individual aptitudes and interests. This year’s back-to-school season will also see the extension of the teaching of the Amazigh language and the opening of preparatory classes, reinforcing the principle of equal opportunity across all regions of the country.
In terms of infrastructure, 604 new educational institutions will be opened throughout Algeria, including 354 primary schools, 162 middle schools, and 88 high schools. Additionally, 459 school canteens will be operational, improving access to meals for students.
Regarding textbooks, the Ministry of National Education has launched the sale of schoolbooks through the National Office for School Publications (ONPS) online platform, ensuring that all necessary resources are readily available to students in educational institutions across the country.
With these reforms and new initiatives, the 2024-2025 school year marks a significant step forward in Algeria’s education system, blending modern digital tools with expanded learning opportunities to better prepare students for the future.
