Algiers, Algeria | June 13th, 2024 — Algeria’s national strategy on food security is yielding positive outcomes, with significant performances becoming evident daily. During a working visit to the Laghouat province, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Youcef Cherfa, announced that the strategic stockpile of essential food products, particularly cereals and legumes, is sufficient to supply the national market for over a year.
Comprehensive Stockpile and Investment in Storage Infrastructure
Accompanied by the Minister of Water Resources, Taha Derbal, Minister Cherfa elaborated on the substantial investments made in logistical infrastructure to ensure food security. He stated that “the sector has allocated 340 billion dinars for the construction of 30 logistical platforms, comprising 350 local centers for storing over 50 million tonnes of widely consumed products.”
As part of the 2024 action plan for agricultural development, Cherfa announced the construction of 350 local centers specifically for cereal storage, aiming to increase the national cereal storage capacity to 9 million tonnes. With the commencement of the harvest and threshing campaign and promising harvest forecasts for this year, measures requested by the President of the Republic are being implemented to avoid past issues of insufficient storage space for cereal harvests. Preliminary forecasts indicate a significantly higher harvest compared to previous years, which saw less than 5 million tonnes harvested, despite an annual national consumption of 9 million tonnes.
Expansion of Legume Cultivation
In addition to cereals, Cherfa highlighted the development of the legume sector. The ministry plans to increase the cultivated area for legumes to 150,000 hectares, aiming to meet the national demand for lentils and chickpeas.
Successful Harvest Campaign
Minister Cherfa discussed the expected yield from this year’s harvest campaign, estimating an average of 80 quintals of cereals per hectare. He attributed this success to the mobilization of 11,000 combine harvesters and the utilization of silos with a total capacity of 43 million quintals of cereals. This yield reflects the effectiveness of the agricultural season and the strategic measures in place.
Encouraging Agricultural Investment
Cherfa emphasized the government’s commitment to fostering investment in the agricultural sector. He noted that all necessary conditions and resources have been provided to encourage investment, allowing farmers to obtain cultivable land within a week of submitting their application, provided they demonstrate a willingness to work and produce.
Algeria’s efforts to ensure food security through strategic planning and investment in agricultural infrastructure are showing promising results. These initiatives are expected to sustain the nation’s food supply and enhance its agricultural productivity in the coming years.
