Belgium Reaffirms Support for Western Sahara’s Right to Self-Determination, Rejecting Moroccan Narrative

Algiers, Algeria | January 31st, 2025 — Belgium has reiterated its unwavering support for the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination, aligning itself with the principles enshrined in United Nations resolutions. Belgian Foreign Minister Bernard Quintin reaffirmed his country’s stance in favor of UN Security Council Resolution 2703, which underscores the vital role of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) in facilitating a just and democratic resolution to the long-standing territorial dispute.

Quintin emphasized that Belgium remains steadfast in its commitment to the UN-led peace process, advocating for a fair, lasting, and mutually acceptable political settlement that respects international legality. His remarks echo the position previously articulated by Belgium’s Prime Minister, reinforcing the country’s adherence to international norms and the exclusive jurisdiction of the UN in mediating the Western Sahara conflict.

This principled stance starkly contrasts with the policies of France and the Moroccan monarchy, which continue to push the so-called “autonomy plan” as a supposed solution to the dispute. Notably, the United Nations has never recognized Morocco’s autonomy proposal as a legitimate alternative to a referendum on self-determination, a fact that further discredits Rabat’s unilateral claims over the occupied territory.

Belgium’s position sends a clear message that any resolution to the Western Sahara conflict must align with international law and the fundamental rights of the Sahrawi people. It also serves as a rebuke to attempts by Morocco and its allies to circumvent UN resolutions and impose a solution that undermines the right of the Sahrawis to determine their own political future.
