ALGIERS- Amar Bendjama, Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, emphasized on Monday that nuclear disarmament is “not only a legal obligation but a moral imperative,” as he explained that “nuclear weapons continue to pose the most serious threat to humanity and its survival.”

Speaking in New York during a meeting of the Security Council on disarmament and nuclear non-proliferation, the Algerian diplomat called on nuclear-armed states to “engage constructively” to maintain the integrity of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).

“The catastrophic humanitarian consequences of these weapons remind us of their devastating effects. We are alarmed by the lack of progress in fulfilling commitments on nuclear disarmament, despite the efforts of most member states,” he continued.

Algeria, as a consistent advocate of the NPT, he argued, “urges nuclear-armed states to fulfill their obligations under Article VI and to take concrete steps towards nuclear disarmament.”

Furthermore, Bendjama stated that Algeria “also calls on non-signatory parties to the NPT to join the Treaty promptly and unconditionally as non-nuclear-weapon states.”

He also affirmed that the inability to reach a consensus at the two previous NPT Review Conferences “is a major concern.” “We urge all States Parties, especially nuclear-armed states, to engage constructively to maintain the integrity of the NPT regime,” he reiterated.

Moreover, Algeria “welcomes the entry into force of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) and the adoption of the ‘Vienna Declaration’ and the ‘Vienna Action Plan’,” the diplomat declared, underscoring the “crucial importance of the entry into force of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT).”
