Bengrina Defends Imane Khelif Against Unfounded Attacks, Urges Support for Algerian Athletes

Algiers, Algeria | August 9th, 2024 — In a recent statement, Abdelkader Bengrina, President of the El-Bina Movement, has strongly defended Algerian boxing champion Imane Khelif amidst a surge of international criticism and media attacks. Bengrina’s remarks come in response to a controversial and orchestrated campaign against Khelif that has attracted the attention of several high-profile global figures and political leaders.

Bengrina voiced his frustration with the involvement of notable personalities, including former U.S. President Donald Trump, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and tech magnate Elon Musk, in the media assault targeting Khelif. Despite the ongoing attacks, Bengrina highlighted that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has thoroughly disproven all false allegations leveled against the Algerian boxer. The IOC’s affirmation of Khelif’s integrity stands in stark contrast to the persistent efforts by the President of the International Boxing Federation (AIBA) to revive the controversy. Bengrina criticized the AIBA President for focusing on this issue while neglecting the exclusion of athletes from his own country from international competitions.

In his statement, Bengrina also praised the Algerian Permanent Representative to the United Nations for effectively countering attempts to politicize Khelif’s case. He expressed his astonishment at the biased and unfounded remarks surrounding the issue and called for a more objective and fair discussion.

Reaffirming the El-Bina Movement’s steadfast support for Imane Khelif, Bengrina aligned with the sentiments of fellow Algerians. He expressed strong hopes for Khelif to secure a decisive victory in the final, emphasizing that her triumph would not only serve as a source of national pride but also as a counter-response to the colonial and far-right factions in France involved in the campaign against her.
