ALGIERS- Abdelkader Bengrina, President of the Elbina Movement, expressed his views on Saturday regarding the decision of teaching unions to go on strike on April 28th and 29th.
In a post on his Facebook page, Bengrina urged for the acceleration of dialogue to encourage rationality and prioritize the interests of students, teachers, and the nation.
He considered the strike announcement as “escalatory,” potentially leading to further tension in a crucial sector. Bengrina warned of the anticipated repercussions of the impending strike, stressing the need for dialogue channels to be activated by teachers and for adherence to previously agreed-upon terms. He addressed teachers, stating, “This action comes at a critical educational juncture, as our students are preparing to take middle school and baccalaureate exams.”
Moreover, the President of the ElBina Movement linked the planned strike to the upcoming presidential election, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing peace and the nation’s interests for the smooth conduct of this national event.
For these reasons, the President of the Elbina Movement appealed to avoid jeopardizing the future of millions of students by escalating tension. Bengrina stressed the necessity for dialogue and concessions from both sides to overcome the impasse between the Ministry of National Education and social partners in the sector, ensuring the welfare of students and teachers.
He called for the immediate launch of consultations by stakeholders in the education sector with all representative social partners, without exclusion, to create a conducive working environment for enriching the proposed education law and enhancing the esteemed status of teachers and educators. This would enable them to fulfill their crucial role in the educational process.
Bengrina urged teachers to postpone the strike to facilitate the beginning of dialogue and teacher involvement in education system reform. He emphasized the importance of avoiding escalation and further tension, advocating for an atmosphere of educational and pedagogical stability to ensure the optimal implementation of comprehensive reform, led by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, in this critical sector.
