Benmbarek Highlights Tebboune’s Economic Vision: A Blueprint for Algeria’s Post-Hydrocarbon Era

Algiers, Algeria | August 26th, 2024 — Abdelkrim Benmbarek, Secretary-General of the National Liberation Front (FLN), underscored, on Monday, the commitment of independent presidential candidate Abdelmadjid Tebboune to advancing Algeria’s economic transition. During a campaign rally at the “Imam Ilyes” Sports Complex in Médéa, Benmbarek emphasized Tebboune’s strategic goal of guiding Algeria towards a diversified and competitive economy, significantly reducing its dependence on hydrocarbons.

Speaking on the 12th day of the electoral campaign for the upcoming September 7th presidential election, Benmbarek highlighted the major economic and financial reforms introduced by Tebboune during his first term, which began in 2019. These reforms, according to Benmbarek, are part of a comprehensive strategy to harness Algeria’s national resources to build an economy resilient enough to compete on the global stage.

A key focus of Tebboune’s economic vision, Benmbarek noted, is the decentralization of power, aimed at empowering local governance structures. Tebboune plans to enhance the autonomy of elected municipal and provincial assemblies through the upcoming revisions of the municipal and wilaya (provincial) codes. This shift is seen as crucial for fostering local development and addressing the specific needs of Algeria’s diverse regions.

Benmbarek also pointed to Tebboune’s success in improving the living conditions in Algeria’s marginalized “shadow zones.” He cited the 17 billion Algerian dinars (DA) invested in the Médéa region alone to uplift underdeveloped areas, reflecting Tebboune’s broader commitment to social equity and national growth.

As Algeria prepares for the September 7 election, Benmbarek called on voters to show strong support for Tebboune, stressing that his re-election would be pivotal in continuing the reforms that have laid the foundation for Algeria’s economic transformation. With a platform centered on sustaining progress and driving Algeria towards a more resilient, diversified economy, Tebboune’s leadership is seen as essential to consolidating the gains made during his first term and ensuring future success.
